The Chief Scientific Adviser (CSA) position is a new one for DCMS, and will be at the heart of the department's decision making. As lead scientific adviser to the Secretary of State, your advice will be listened to at the very highest levels of Government and help ensure we get policy right across a wide array of issues that matter to the British people, from internet safety to the impact of sport in schools.

The sectors covered by DCMS are important ones, in volume and strategic importance. The department works to drive growth, enrich lives and promote Britain to the world and has one of the widest policy remits in Government, including the digital economy, communications, sport and the media.

What are we offering?
An opportunity to join a highly respected department with the objective to drive growth, enrich lives and promote Britain to the world. DCMS has one of the widest policy remits in Government, including the digital economy, communications, sport and the media. Your brief will cover all of these areas, ensuring that departmental decisions are informed by the best science and engineering advice. You will be trusted by the wider science and engineering communities outside Government and will marshal their resources to help solve challenges, plan innovative solutions and inform the work of Government.

What we are looking for?
To deliver our aspirations we need a highly credible scientist, engineer or technologist, with an academic and industrial background relevant to the work of the DCMS policy portfolio. An ability and willingness to work with the department on matters of strategic and national importance including issues affecting the well-being of the UK and national security. You will need to be able to operate at a senior level in a large fast-paced organisation, thinking and acting strategically to develop creative solutions to the management of complex problems. A proven ability to communicate complex scientific/technical advice clearly and persuasively in writing and orally to ministers, officials, the media and public and outstanding collaborative and interpersonal skills to build relationships and networks both within and external to government.
