Working on projects that are vital to the safe operation of the marine industries, the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) is an exceptional place in which to explore what you are capable of.

Our high-quality marine geospatial information is used around the globe, with a client base that varies from international shipping businesses to defence navies.

Our customers know they can rely on us to provide industry-leading products and services, and as such, we are committed to employing a diverse and inclusive team to deliver our exceptional standards.

Our people range from parents and carers who are returning to work after a career break to those who need a second chance at establishing their career – making for a particularly dynamic environment in which every life stage is welcome.

We are a supportive organisation that appreciates that you may have taken an extended career break for a variety of reasons – but that you may now be in a position to re-pursue your profession once again.

We would therefore like to invite you to return to Software Engineering with our industry-leading ‘Returnship Programme’. Over the course of a year, we will support you with bespoke training and mentoring, and all the resources you could possibly need to update your capabilities and become a fully-skilled Engineer.

Joining a number of agile teams, you will gain knowledge in C# or Java, plus Scrum, test automation and various up-to-date frameworks. Benefitting from the guidance of a technical mentor, you will undertake a comprehensive education that will include tutor-led courses, culminating in the production of a large software project that will demonstrate your enhanced skills – thereby setting you on the path to an exciting future.

As a civil service organisation with a commercial approach to conducting business, we offer a fast-paced working environment that is both goal-focussed and exceptionally supportive.

You will therefore thrive in this team if you are able to work at pace, while adopting a partnership approach to your work. With great communication skills and a passion for learning, you will have the capacity to work with both technical and non-technical colleagues.

Crucially, you will have at least two years of previous professional experience of.Net or Java and object-orientated concepts, with a good knowledge of design principles and patterns.

With the chance to adopt a flexible working pattern to suit your lifestyle, this is a unique role that will provide you with a great work/life balance. We also offer creche and nursery facilities, plus forward-thinking benefits including generous holiday entitlement and a lift-share scheme.

With the scope to work with some of the foremost thinkers in the marine geospatial field, this is a valuable opportunity to pursue your professional goals – and support those in the marine industries at the same time. Join us, and discover your full Software Engineering potential.
