The UK Hydrographic Office is a leading centre for hydrography, providing marine geospatial data to inform maritime decisions. We work with a wide range of data suppliers and partners to support maritime navigation, safety, security and marine development around the UK and worldwide.

Software engineering is a core activity at UKHO. We use Agile to deliver, running multiple collaborative teams to create customer focussed digital services, data solutions and software for desktop, web and mobile with cutting edge technologies. We emphasise quality and have high standards for design, test automation and continuous delivery.

Main purpose of role

The role will provide technical leadership across UKHO in the field of test automation to be able to deliver on UKHO strategic digital vision.

 

The post holder will be expected to provide range of range of technical leadership roles across the UKHO, these will include:

  • promote the use of open source tools and are proficient in multiple test scripting languages
  • have a presence in external test communities and regularly share learning
  • work closely with leads across the digital, data and technology profession to champion quality
  • guide test team members to design test strategies - this may involve more complex and larger scale delivery
  • manage communications between projects to control integration and dependencies

Provide technical guidance to ensure a co-ordinated approach to automated tests within programs is in place and is kept updated.

Mentoring other members of the development team in creating high value automated tests.

Working with other teams providing technical leadership in ensuring that automated test environments are optimised for the best performance of the automated tests

Tasks, expectations/deliverables

Writing complex automation code (e.g. in C# or Java code against API’s)

Automated Test Management

Provide technical leadership across the UKHO on how to structure automated tests, maintain them and develop future ones using best industry practices

Lead investigation into underlying issues with Automated Tests and manage them through to resolution across programs.

Relevant processes are in place to ensure automated tests are maintained across programs.

Technical debt for automated tests is eliminated as much as possible across programs

Helping programs maintain their automated tests in a consistent manner across programs

Best return on investment is obtained from automated tests, optimising best value and reducing waster across programs.

Lead in analysing of requirements/user stories and design manual or automated tests and acceptance criteria to ensure the software under test meets those requirements. Peer review test scripts produced by other testing colleagues. This will include writing Behaviour Driven Tests using Visual Studio and Specflow.

Lead participates in test execution, defect recording and capture of test results using agile Scrum and/or waterfall approaches as required. This may include the development and use of automated test scripts.

Summarise results of test execution into test reports, during and on completion of testing. This may also include guiding testers in designing test strategies for complex/large deliveries and helping manage communications between projects to control integration and dependencies.  

Automated Testing Technical Support

Be recognised as an automated testing technical subject matter expert across UKHO providing

leadership at the technical level across the organisation,

Mentor other members of test engineering in best practices for test automation.

Engage with wider government agile delivery teams such as Government Digital services to research cutting edge techniques and innovation in test automation.

Provide subject matter expertise and best practice for test automation and assist in designing and implementing automation framework for new and existing applications across UKHO.

Leading Test Automation initiatives with the Application lifecycle management team seeking

improvements in automated test architecture This will include the use of telemetry to identify bottlenecks in the test automation pipeline as part of a co-ordinated approach of continuous integration) and redesign if needed of automated tests working with the relevant scrum team.  

Continually develop own skills as part of a program of professional development

  • Able to demonstrate extensive experience of delivering professional software testing services within an Agile Framework. (This would include experience of a wide range of testing techniques such as bdd, automated and risk-based testing. In depth understanding and application of the agile software delivery lifecycle is required along with evidence of acting as a champion of test automation)
  • Extensive experience with building and maintaining  automated testing framework’s
  • Evidence of acting in a lead technical role
  • Extensive experience of Java
