Ocean Environment Data Specialist
23-month fixed-term appointment with possibility of permanency
The UK Hydrographic Office is a leading center for hydrography, providing marine geospatial data to inform maritime decisions. We work with a wide range of data suppliers and partners to support maritime navigation, safety, security and marine development around the UK and worldwide.
Our Ocean Environment Team – part of the Scientific Analysis Group of our Operations Division – supports commercial shipping, the Royal Navy and other defence customers by ensuring marine data is accurate and up to date. They also provide hydrographic expertise and specialist consultancy, while developing and updating products to meet the changing needs of customers and ensure safety of life at sea.
Your role, as a Data Specialist, will be to develop methods that increase the efficiency of our data management, so that we can have the widest possible range of appropriately assured data, which is tagged, assessed and ready to use. Writing code that will help us to undertake data analysis and the visualisation of our datasets, you will work to improve the versatility of our data holdings and collaborate with other teams to help build our data management strategy and processes for the future.
With a degree in Maths, Statistics or a scientific or engineering discipline, you will have practical experience of working with data and ideally know how to use a GIS package. You will be able to programme confidently in R, Python or Matlab and pick up other languages quickly.
It would certainly be an advantage if you have some knowledge of UNIX or LINUX and experience of processing marine or oceanographic data. We’ll expect you to keep abreast of relevant technologies, open source initiatives, scientific forums and programming libraries.
