In the absence of the ward/department manager, you will supervise, deploy and develop all staff to ensure efficient management within the specialty/ward/unit. You will provide senior cover for, and be responsible for the ongoing management of the ward/ department area in the absence of the senior nurse. In conjunction with and/or in the absence of the ward/department manager you will participate in efficient and effective HR planning - management of employee conduct, duty rosters, annual leave, study leave, mandatory training sessions, sickness absence reporting and management of the appropriate use of Bank and Agency nursing complying with agreed policy and procedure. You will assist the ward manager in the recruitment and selection of staff as required. You will assist the ward/department manager in ensuring all ward/department nursing staff attend regular 1:1 meetings ensuring completion of regular PDP's and appraisals according to Organisational Policy. You will ensure effective management of ward/department resources including stores, supplies and medicines. You will participate in ward/department and directorate/unit audit activity where appropriate and assist the ward/department manager in the development of evidenced based practice as required. You should be aware of, and ensure all staff observe and adhere to hospital organisational and national policies. You will assess, plan, implement and evaluate evidenced based programmes of care with reference to patients, without direct supervision. You will co-ordinate the provision of seamless care for patients from admission to discharge by utilising efficient verbal and written communication practices with all members of the Multi-Disciplinary Team / Primary Care Services and Carers. You will take responsibility for a defined group of patients within the clinical specialty. You will provide senior cover and manages the ward/department area in the absence of the Senior Charge Nurse or Deputy. In conjunction with the Senior Charge Nurse you will ensure that nursing resource is utilised efficiently by managing on duty rosters, short notice sickness absence and manpower resources to comply with agreed policy and procedure. You will ensure effective management of ward/department resources including stores, supplies and medicines. You will provide teaching, guidance, supervision and support for junior staff (qualified and non qualified). You will assist the Senior Charge Nurse in the development of ward/department based orientation and education programmes for newly qualified staff and student nurses and acts as mentor / preceptor as required, providing teaching, guidance, supervision and support for junior staff (qualified and non qualified). You will participate in performance appraisal of self and junior staff in line with personal, directorate and organisational objectives. You will participate in ward/department and Directorate audit activity where appropriate and assist in the development of evidenced based practice as required and ensure that all written documentation within the ward/department area is clear, concise, timely and complies with the NMC Standards for Records and Record Keeping. You will assist with the safe custody of patient's personal belongings in accordance with organisational policy and you should be aware of, observes and adheres to hospital, organisational and national policies. You will work within the NMC code of practice and professional guidelines and report all accidents/incidents/complaints involving patients, carers and staff to the senior nurse and commence enquiries or documentation as necessary. You will participate in the identification of risk and risk management strategies incorporating these, through nurse management, to the risk register and ensure that risks to patients are identified through the use of the Clinical Incident Reporting system (DATIX). You will keep abreast of changes in Health and Safety Legislation and policies with particular regard to COSHH, Fire, RIDDOR, Infection Control & Manual Handling. It is essential that you are currently a Registered Nurse with the NMC and that you have evidence of continuing professional development. The shift pattern for this post is Monday - Friday as per the service needs. This post requires membership of Disclosure Scotland's PVG Scheme.
