Our client is the rail contracting division of a GBP1bn construction services group. Following a strategic restructure, the group has consolidated all of their regional rail contracting activity into a central business. Backed by a strong delivery record spanning almost 50 years and established relationships with most rail sector clients, this business is now poised for significant growth and to dramatically increase their market share. As such, the appointment of a proven and highly ambitious rail sector director to champion this expansion and realise their potential is regarded as business critical.

The appointed candidate will be well known within Network Rail across the regions, with an established reputation and strategic relationships already in place, allowing for early engagement and client understanding ahead of CP6. The Director of Rail will also be accountable for engaging with the group exec in developing, aligning and implementing their growth strategy, with a view to taking the rail business to in excess of GBP100m turnover.

Ideally already living in southern England, it is essential that you:
  • Have held P&L accountability as a business director / general manager, with responsibility for in excess of GBP20m turnover, where over a sustained period, you have delivered strong leadership and profitable growth.
  • Bring a health & safety mindset, familiar with the restrictions and expectations of working in the rail sector, and understand the cultural alignment required when working in a highly regulated industry.
  • Can demonstrate knowledge of opportunities, decision makers and the business drivers necessary to start securing framework contracts in excess of GBP20m with Network Rail (not TfL).
  • Have worked within a credible rail sector contractor where you have delivered either civil engineering, building, electrical or maintenance contracts; safely, to programme, on budget and to the required standards.
  • Are highly ambitious, with the gravitas, influencing skills and potential to lead significant growth of the rail business, and ultimately form part of the group executive board.
