Head Pastry Chef (up to GBP25,000)

Our coffee shop (which operates more like a restaurant in terms of scale) is well known for its tasty scones, plus amazing desserts and cakes. To give you an idea of scale we make and sell eight to nine cheesecakes each day, as well as six to seven cakes plus multiple tray bakes, cupcakes, hot desserts etc. We sell more than 85,000 scones a year. We can seat 240 in our coffee shop and it is often full.


Salary GBP21,000-GBP25,000 dependent on skills and level of experience.

The position includes

  • Ensuring our cake counter is adequately stocked every day with cakes, scones and hot/cold desserts
  • Making and preparing afternoon teas (we book in up to 15-20 parties per week) and breakfast items
  • Planning ahead and ordering ingredients
  • Preparing detailed costings for all items
  • Keeping track of what sells
  • Liaising with Catering Manager to adjust the menus, in response to seasonal changes and customer demand eg Mother's Day etc.
  • Baking and decorating cakes and desserts, working alongside two Bakery Sous Chefs, Bakery early morning assistant (who comes in to do the scone mix) and other catering assistants
  • *no evening hours or Christmas working*


  • Proven experience working in a busy kitchen, in commercial cooking and a passion for food
  • You are not fazed by cooking a wide variety of dishes and have a particular skill and passion in making cakes and desserts
  • Must be detail oriented and able to manage competing priorities and multiple deadlines in a fast paced environment
  • You are able to lead a team, and can work quickly and efficiently to get the job done
  • Full time working ten days each fortnight, including every sunday. Working hours 7.30am to 5pm (4pm Sundays). Please note we are not open in the evenings
  • You'll need to work most bank holidays (excluding Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day), but will be given a day's holiday in lieu

We are looking for a talented and experienced pastry chef who is passionate about baking cakes and desserts and is a natural team leader. You will have experience working in a busy kitchen or exemplary qualifications in patisserie. You must be organised, driven and an excellent communicator - leading your team in setting high standards.
