Research Scientist - Cambridge, UK
1-year fixed-term contract
Based at NIAB, Cambridge, UK, we are looking to recruit a talented Research Scientist to work on the BBSRC-funded Cross-Institute Strategic Programme called 'Designing Future Wheat' (DFW). The work will involve investigation of various aspects of grain quality in wheat and will include:
- Analysis of wheat lacking small B-type starch granules, involving biochemical analysis of B-less grains and identification and analysis of candidate genes.
- Genetic analysis of wheat with high-amylose content, involving biochemical analysis of a mapping population and identification of genetic markers linked to the trait.
- Production of mutant and transgenic wheat with large embryos and analysis of the impact of genes controlling embryo size on grain development, and on grain size and quality.
The successful candidate will work closely with a Post-Doctoral researcher, with other members of the DFW team within NIAB. They will also interact with DFW project partners in other institutes/universities.
The successful applicant should have a BA or BSc in biology, biochemistry or plant genetics (or a related subject area) and have previous experience of working in a plant science laboratory. An MSc in plant science would be advantageous as would experience of research on plant molecular biology and biochemical trait analysis, preferably within crop plants.
Basic bioinformatics experience is desirable as well as experience or knowledge of transgenic plant production and analysis. A proven ability to work independently and as part of a team are both essential, as are good communication and interpersonal skills.
The post will require travel within the UK.
Starting salary is in the range of GBP21,618 - GBP24,020, depending on qualifications, skills and experience.
