Directly reporting to the Director of Business, Assets and International, you will lead the team that has technical and policy responsibility (product ownership) for the UK’s R&D tax credits, patent box regime, venture capital and enterprise investment schemes and creative industry reliefs as well as the capital allowances and intangible assets regimes. Your team will work closely with operational colleagues including in specialist delivery units, business and advisors, to ensure that these reliefs meet their objectives, that we can promote effective compliance and improve the customer experience.

Responsibilities include:

  • Leading the team with a total headcount of approximately 25 people and with six direct reports (mainly Grade 6s);

  • Building capability within the team and working with Deputy Director colleagues in BAI to ensure a high standard of policy and technical professionalism and to promote innovation within the directorate;

  • Working across HMRC to ensure that we develop our products in line with HMRC’s strategic and transformation objectives;

  • Building strong relationships with HM Treasury policy partners, and colleagues in many other departments including in particular the Department for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, ensuring we take a themed and joined up approach across the HMRC policy function;

  • Contributing to the leadership of HMRC and CS&TD and playing a corporate role in supporting the Director as a member of the BAI Senior Leadership Team;

  • Providing highly visible people leadership and championing staff engagement;

  • Ensuring that our teams use front line and customer insight to identify flaws in the system and continuously improve the end to end process design around the customer, working closely with customer and process directorates to achieve this; and

  • Developing, negotiating and agreeing the key performance measures and targets for the areas for which the jobholder is accountable.
