The Department of Health (DH) works across public health, the NHS and adult social care, covering one of the widest remits in the public sector. It is responsible for ensuring everyone can access the health and care they need – from supporting people to have the best start in life to staying in good health and living as independently as they can. 

We are looking to appoint a Director of Communications to drive excellence in the external and internal communication activities across the Department’s complex and high profile agenda.  Our communications portfolio is one of the largest in Government, and one of the busiest media operations.

Leading a team of over 140 communications professionals, the Director of Communications will work to Ministers’ priorities in the department along with promoting and supporting the Government’s wider public service reforms, with responsibility for campaigns, public and media relations, digital channels, stakeholder engagement and corporate communications.  

The Director will be the head of the communications profession, and will be accountable for communications strategy, spend and professional standards across the department’s 20 agencies and other bodies.  They will also be the senior advisor to the Secretary of State, Ministers and senior officials on senior communications matters.

We are seeking an exceptional strategic communications leader with experience of working in a complex environment that is subject to media attention and public scrutiny.

Whether from the public or private sector, you will have an impressive track record in providing clear, balanced advice and professional leadership at Board and senior management level on a wide range of sensitive and complex communications issues. 

Additionally you will bring a proven track record of devising and implementing effective internal and external communication strategies. You will need to have a high degree of political sensitivity and professionalism to command confidence at every level, and will be a highly effective leader and manager of your own staff.
