The Department

The Estates Department, under the Estates Manager, is responsible for the efficient management, maintenance, repair and improvement of all School property, grounds and gardens, together with repair and replacement of furniture, furnishings and equipment.

In addition to its dedicated team of skilled employees, the School contracts approximately 100 different external companies during the course of a year, to supplement its in-house capacity and to deliver specialist skills.

The Role

Under the general direction of the Estates Manager, the main purpose of this role is to supervise the external contractors and to monitor their work and practices.

Responsibilities

The following list is not exhaustive, but is intended to show the range of tasks required of the Assistant Surveyor (for full details, please see the attached job description):

  • Supervision of external contractors, including: appropriate induction; ensuring compliance with school policies and procedures; and monitoring the quality of their work.
  • Building inspections to identify maintenance defects.
  • Assessing and agreeing furniture requirements.
  • Investigating repair requests and liaising with the Estates Surveyor regarding appropriate action.

Qualifications/Experience

The role is likely to suit someone who is experienced across a variety of trades and/or who has knowledge and understanding of the building industry, for example, an experienced tradesperson or qualified buildings surveyor. A full driving licence and good computer skills are essential, and experience of managing people will be a distinct advantage.

Personal Qualities

The successful candidate will be able to work on their own and also as part of a team. S/he will be self-motivated, with a can-do attitude, and will be able to instil good working practices in others. Strong communication skills and attention to detail are essential.

Special Role Requirements

At times, the role may require heavy lifting and working at heights.

Hours of Work

The basic hours are 0800 to 1630, Monday to Friday, plus 0800 to 1300 for up to 12 Saturday mornings per year on a rota basis.

Remuneration

Salary will be dependent upon experience and qualifications, but is likely to be up to GBP28,000 p.a.
