The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is the UK government department responsible for safeguarding our natural environment, supporting our world-leading food and farming industry, and sustaining a thriving rural economy. Our broad remit means we play a major role in people's day-to-day life, from the food we eat, and the air we breathe, to the water we drink.

This is an exciting time to join Defra as we look to forge our future approach to the environment and agriculture outside the Europeran Union. The Director of Devolution, Legislation, Governance and Private Office (DLGP) is a key role that will join the senior leadership team at Defra. You will be critical in achieving the Defra vision and leading our work in legislation, building strong relationships between the nations of the UK and pursuing reforms in the way we work across the Defra group.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record and extensive experience with managing complex programmes and projects in a legislative context. You will be a natural leader, with enthusiasm and energy to motivate and inspire teams. As a credible influencer you will be able to build complex relationships with a range of senior stakeholders including in the devolved administrations. You will be a confident communicator, able to engage successfully in high profile areas with an understanding of handling highly politically sensitive issues.
