Large Business is responsible for HMRC’s compliance work with its most complex business customers. Our strategy is aimed at the 2,000 most complex businesses, which have each been allocated a Customer Compliance Manager (CCM). Large Businesses fall into their own customer group within the Customer Centric Business Strategy – High Value, Large and Complex – because they are significantly different to businesses in other customer groups. 

This is an exciting and challenging time to be part of Large Business, as it is the focus of keen media and Parliamentary interest. We are in the process of implementing a package of new measures to increase large business tax compliance and transparency. 

Large Business is organised into seven regions and two specialist teams, each headed by an SCS (SCS PB1) Deputy Director who form the Large Business Leadership Team (LBLT). We currently have one SCS1 Deputy Director Role within LB South and Wales, who is line managed by an SCS2 Director. LB South and Wales is a high performing compliance area; with a track record of bringing in billions of pounds of compliance yield over the last few years and being at the forefront of new ways of working. 

As Deputy Director for LB South and Wales you will be responsible for more than 400 staff across three offices (Bristol, Cardiff and Reading), including peer management of 4 SCS1 Assistant Directors, and the assurance of around 300 businesses. In line with LB’s strategic direction, there is a growth agenda around LB’s presence in Cardiff building numbers from about 150 to about 190 by 2021. LB’s presence in Reading is expected to remain at about 60 through to 2025 when the transitional site closes. 

As a key member of the Department’s senior leadership team, you will be expected to play an active role in the on-going corporate management and development of the organisation. We expect all our senior leaders to be:

Person Specification 

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate success in the following areas: 

● Recent compliance experience of working on the complex tax issues HMRC handles, and the ability to quickly develop an understanding of the Large Business operating model. 

● Excellent leadership skills with the ability to nurture and build capability within teams and the ability to motivate people towards stretching goals and inspire the team and delivery partners to engage fully with our business plans and HMRC’s long term vision. 

● A strong track record of building effective internal and external partnerships very quickly across organisational boundaries. 

● Strong customer service ethos and focus on delivery with the ability to respond quickly to changing circumstances and tight timescales as priorities evolve and escalate. 

● Excellent communication and influencing skills to engage confidently in a wide range of situations. 


Selection process details
