As Chief Economist, you will play a lead role in driving a change programme to make a significant improvement in the effectiveness of analysis across the department (how analysts are organised and operate, and how policy use evidence).  You will provide a strategic vision for analysis and thought leadership.

 

You will help ensure best practice in the use of evidence and analysis in strategic policy development and in key analytical products (such as Impact Assessments, Business Cases, Evaluations).

 

You will bring a practical approach to applying your economic skills and knowledge to the development of policy, and to building departmental capacity for understanding and using economic analysis.  

You will provide leadership, professional oversight and line management to a multi-disciplinary Central Analytical Team of around 25 analysts (economists, statisticians, operational and social researchers), and indirectly to around 60 analysts in the bedded out Analytical Community (who have a ‘dotted line’ management arrangement with the central team).


You will ensure that internal analysis and commissioned research is high quality, and delivered on time and within budget.


You will strengthen team capabilities and professional development, oversee the development of analyst clusters in policy directorates, and build links with other departments and DCMS’ arms-length bodies.

You will represent the department on cross-Whitehall analyst groups, working with colleagues across DCMS.

You will work closely with the department’s Chief Scientific Officer in advancing the access of expert scientific advice to inform policy.
