Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Colorectal Surgery. The post is full time, fixed term for 5 years within the Division of Surgery based at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and the Royal Marsden Hospital with an honorary consultant contract with Chelsea and Westminster Foundation NHS Trust, the Royal Marsden Hospital Foundation NHS Trust and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

Duties and responsibilities

The post holder will use translational research to improve outcomes for patients undergoing surgical treatment of colorectal disease through the transfer of technology into clinical practice. He/she will have opportunities to harness Imperial College’s interdisciplinary research strengths working with clinicians, engineers, designers, and policy makers to create highly innovative solutions. A key cross-cutting theme is precision surgery describing the coupling of established clinical–pathological indexes with state-of-the-art molecular profiling to create diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic strategies precisely tailored to each patient's requirements. The Division of Surgery has established a very effective Clinical Trials Unit which will support the post holder in translation of high quality research into clinical studies.

Essential requirements

The post holder must be a fully qualified Clinical Academic Specialist holding a PhD and with a special interest in Colorectal Cancer and GMC registration. The post holder must have training and be competent in pelvic exenterative surgery for advanced primary and recurrent colorectal cancer. The post will be 50/50 split between clinical service and research. The post holder will be expected to take a leading role in undergraduate clinical education at Chelsea and Westminster and to engage with the Department’s postgraduate portfolio in addition to supervising postgraduate research students.

All members of clinical academic staff are expected to be active and highly respected in clinical practice, in research, publishing papers in leading journals, attending conferences, teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate taught course students, supervising research students and obtaining funding to support their students and research activities. The appointee will be expected to have a record in such activities.

Teaching and research are considered an integral part of the post. The post will involve the usual administrative duties associated with a busy academic and research-active environment and the appointee will be expected to enhance the academic standing of the Department of Surgery and Cancer.
