Data Strategy and Governance Lead
Inspire the future of UKHO’s data strategies.
Promoting excellence and a collaborative team spirit across everything that we do, the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) offers a career path that is quite distinct.
First and foremost, our work is internationally recognised and widely respected. Providing exceptional marine geospatial information and products to global organisations, we ensure those in the marine industries are able to navigate the oceans safely.
And secondly, our work is essential to the British economy and global trade efficiency. Enabling wide-ranging industries to operate efficiently, we support marine research, environmental protection, the defence of the nation’s borders, resource exploration and a host of other important trades.
Within this exciting and fast-paced environment, you will make your mark on our Operations Division as you define, document and establish UKHO’s data governance policies.
Working with the Head of Content and a number of key stakeholders, you will ensure their priorities are taken on board as you support the development and implementation of a high level geospatial data strategy and data management practices.
This will include;
- Documenting guiding principles, our vision and mission, the scope of the data we hold and also the role it plays in the value chain, our objectives and key milestones.
- You will then ensure these policies are adopted across UKHO, offering training where necessary and developing action plans for when non-conformance has been identified.
It is important to us that our data governance sets examples to others. You will therefore put measures in place to create a ‘Data As a Service’ function, defining the activities that we need to undertake and the people we need to employ to sustain this function.
You will also support our contribution to governmental and international data governance activities. As such we will expect you to have significant experience of working with or defining policies, standards and processes within data governance, data management, data quality, metadata and metrics.
As a collaborative team-player, you will be committed to delivering a high calibre service, driving standards up with the confidence and leadership skills to implement a culture of change.
This is a unique opportunity to take on a high priority role, establishing the direction we take in the future. As interesting as it is career-defining, this position will stretch your capabilities, offering you the scope to shape our data strategies.
Benefitting from a good work/life balance and plenty of support – set against the backdrop of a public sector organisation with a commercial outlook – it is hard to imagine a more important data management role.
