Job summary

The UK DRI at Imperial has been established to address a medical research area of highest importance and future impact as one of six new national centres of excellence embedded in major UK universities that together are intended to transform the diagnosis, treatment and care of people with dementias. MRC and charity partners Alzheimer's Society and Alzheimer’s Research UK have invested £250m in fulfilment of the ambition identified in the Prime Minister's 2020 Challenge on Dementia. 

The UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) at Imperial is seeking an outstanding researcher interested taking on a challenging role with considerable scope for independent scientific achievement and personal growth. The post holder will be a key member of the research staff supporting Professor Takats’ contribution to the programme led by Professor Matthews. Professor Takats has been an international leader in applications of advanced mass spectrometric methods to medicine.

Duties and responsibilities

The post involves all the organisation of mass spectrometric imaging project aimed at large-scale molecular characterisation of ex vivo brain tissue from people who have suffered from late-life neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease. There is considerable scope for career growth within the post. Substantial independence will be expected, with anticipation for a growing role in contributing to the design of the research. In addition, he/she will be expected to submit publications to refereed journals and to join in preparing applications for external research funding.

Essential requirements

The successful candidate will have an MSc in Chemistry / Biology or equivalent. The post holder will also have experience of imaging mass spectrometry, preferably DESI-MSI and tissue imaging and practical experience with the statistical analysis of imaging mass spectrometric datasets.

Further information

The contract is a full time and fixed term for 18 months.
