Full Time

As an internationally-renowned industry-leading provider of marine geospatial information, the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) offers a fascinating career trajectory. Our products and services are used by a huge array of marine industries – such as the fishing trade, those involved in resource exploration and even defence navies – thereby enabling safe navigation of the waters, and ultimately improving the financial prospects of our customers. We are constantly evolving according to the needs of our clients, resulting in a working atmosphere that is both fast-paced and progressive.

Our Operations Division is at the heart of this important work. Producing navigational and situational awareness products that are used by clients ranging from the Royal Navy to those with commercial interests, we are proud to craft outputs that are of a world-class standard. As such, this is a valuable opportunity to explore your graphic design skills within our Admiralty Navigational Publications, with the results being used across both digital and paper projects. Each challenge will be different, so one day you might be working on the cover of a nautical publication, while the next might see you shaping a leisure product or an archive chart. You might also be asked to support the test and delivery of software and hardware upgrades. Working across anything from diagrams to catalogues and CD labels, your print-ready artwork will meet consistently high standards.

Across all challenges, you will be encouraged to identify areas where your skills could be enhanced. With access to plenty of training and development opportunities, we will help you further your knowledge and capabilities, making this a particularly exciting role in which you can really grow and develop. You will, therefore, thrive in the role if you are ambitious with the flexibility to adapt to the needs of your workload and colleagues. As an experienced user of desktop publishing software, you will need a comprehensive understanding of Adobe Creative Suite 3 InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat and Quicksilver on both PC and Mac. You will also be adept at scanner operation and colour management. As a collaborative team player with a can-do attitude, you will excel in our team if you have experience of constructing publications, while a working knowledge of book production and design would be useful but isn’t strictly necessary.

This is a team where you will thrive if you have the capacity to make effective decisions in a commercial environment. As a civil service organisation, our staff enjoy the considerable perks of the job such as excellent networking opportunities and access to desirable pension options, while they also enjoy the buzz that comes with a target-focussed office. So if you are ready to join a department that is friendly, supportive and hugely talented, then we would welcome your application.
