Our client is a highly rated litigation funder with an outstanding investment track record to date. The business started in the US where they have a highly rated team with significant experience of litigation and funding solutions. They actively manage tens of billions of assets with deployed capital of hundreds of millions and access to more capital as required. They have built a strong infrastructure covering the US, Europe and Asia.

The need has arisen for an ambitious mid-level associate to join their London team. Candidates likely to have a litigation background with experience gained in a mid-larger law firm or possibly high-end boutique firm. Candidates will have experience of high value commercial litigation and/or international arbitration.

In addition to your legal experience you will have a keen interest in the financial markets and investing. The business treats litigation financing as a form of corporate finance where the underlying asset is one or more legal claims. Their resources team comprise more than 100 lawyers, analysts, financial modelling and financial structuring experts, and other professionals, they can quickly understand individual and portfolio cases and provide sound analysis. No other litigation funder can match the multidisciplinary depth and breadth that they offer.

The role will involve originating new cases, drafting and negotiating commercial agreements such as approval memos to the investment committee, case analysis and pitching and presenting to existing and target clients. Clients include law firms from boutique through to large international firms and in-house legal departments. You will build up your expertise and knowledge of corporate finance by advising clients on how to unlock the value in their assets, borrow on a non-recourse basis without increasing balance sheet exposure resulting in significantly improved EBITDA and share price. Financial modelling will become a part of the role and you will develop your core litigation skills into corporate financing of legal assets. Origination of cases will feature as an important part of the role as the business continues to expand internationally and as the sector continues with its exponential growth and also becomes more competitive with new market entrants.

Candidates will be entrepreneurial and ambitious and not looking to pursue a traditional career as a fee earning solicitor in a firm or possibly as in-house counsel. It is likely that you will have around 4 to 5 years pqe and a good network of contacts across firms and in-house counsel.

Prospects will be excellent as the litigation finance market is still relatively embryonic in relation to the size of the legal services market. There will be an increasing demand in years to come for experienced litigation funding lawyers as new entrants come into the market and the demand for experienced individuals will exceed supply.
