The Department of Surgery and Cancer at Imperial and the CRUK Grand Challenge ‘Rosetta’ Consortium are seeking an outstanding post-doctoral researcher interested taking on a challenging role with considerable scope for independent scientific achievement and personal growth. The post-holder will be a key member of the research staff supporting Professor Takats’ and Professor Robert Glen’s contribution. Professor Takats has been an international leader in applications of advanced mass spectrometric methods to medicine.
Duties and responsibilities
The post involves all the organisation of mass spectrometric imaging project (using DESI/REIMS) aimed at large-scale molecular characterisation of colorectal adenomas to establish features being characteristic for lesions having the tendency of undergoing malignant transformation. These metabolic hallmarks will be used for the in-vivo or ex-vivo analysis of colorectal polyps in course of diagnostic endoscopic interventions, however the approach can equally be implemented for the intraoperative characterisation of arbitrary solid tumours and associated margin assessment.
There is considerable scope for career growth within the post. Substantial independence will be expected, with anticipation for a growing role in contributing to the design of the research. In addition, the post holder will be expected to submit publications to refereed journals and to contribute to the preparation of applications for external research funding.
The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Chemistry or Biology or a closely related discipline, or equivalent in research or commercial experience. Previous research experience in imaging mass spectrometry, preferably DESI-MS is essential in addition to knowledge of high-throughput imaging MS data processing.
This post is full time and fixed term until 30 April 2019 in the first instance.
