HMP/YOI Parc are looking for a pharmacy dispenser to join our dedicated and enthusiastic nurse-led 24/7 Primary Care service. This secure site holds approximately 1800 men and boys, predominantly serving sentences of two years or more.

Job Outline:

The post holder will be required to work as an active member of the pharmacy team to ensure delivery of a legal, safe, high quality specialist prison pharmaceutical service which reflects National and Local Policy and Priorities, taking into account the high level of security that must be maintained at all times.
The post holder will assist the pharmacy team in delivering aspects of the pharmacy services, including stock control and dispensing, to HMP Parc. Raise any concerns with appropriate management to ensure all legal and local requirements are met. Contribute to ensuring the safe, efficient and timely dispensing of prescriptions and supply of medication on the wings. Contribute to the development of and support implementation of medicine management strategy and associated services and projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Receive, unpack, input data, store and appropriately distribute pharmaceuticals and equipment in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Advise appropriate staff when specific goods have been received and to transfer the goods to the appropriate location.
  • Assist in the collection and delivery of goods from and to the delivery point at the Prison Gate and to pharmacy and wings as necessary.
  • Resolve problems arising from deliveries and outstanding orders and notify Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacist.
  • Assist in the maintenance of stationery stocks.
  • Assist with routine production of orders.
  • Dispense individual In-Possession and Not In-Possession (including Controlled Drugs) medications in preparation
  • Maintain dispensary stocks by stock rotation and checking expiry dates and by keeping accurate computer records.
  • Maintain clean and tidy dispensing facilities and safe systems of work.
  • Answer the dispensary telephone calls and deal with enquiries in the appropriate manner according to departmental procedures.
  • Assist in general house-keeping duties as and when necessary including:
  • Putting away medicines
  • Replenishing consumable items eg bags, bottles, oral syringes etc
  • Filing paperwork
  • Under supervision provide advice to prisoners on compliance and concordance.
  • Under supervision provide advice about prescribed medication.
  • Under supervision provide medication advice and advice on minor ailments reflecting the level of
  • service of a community pharmacy.
  • Clerical duties including maintaining pharmacy forms and documents, ensuring relevant paperwork and documents are completed and filed appropriately.
  • Use the IT systems appropriately for the completion of patient details and movements and efficient communication with other healthcare staff and wider prison estate (including methadone electronic dispensing systems).
  • Anticipate potential problems and communicate with line managers in a timely manner.
  • Assist in the collection and analysis of workload data, when requested

Key Competencies:

  • As per GPhC professional standards any member of staff involved in the dispensing process must meet the GPhC's minimum training requirements for this type of role and start training within three months of starting in the role.
  • To meet minimum training requirements a dispensing/pharmacy assistant needs to take the relevant modules of the Level 2 certificate in pharmacy service skills.

Essential Skills Required:

  • NVQ Level 2 Pharmacy Services
  • General education qualifications. GCSE (A-C) Maths, English and Science
  • Experience of working within a team
  • Experience of working within a healthcare environment
  • Able to demonstrate a good standard of literacy and numeracy
  • Able to provide examples of diversity in practice
  • Able to work within challenging and complex situations
  • Passport for clearance

Desirable Skills:

  • Work experience, preferably in a pharmaceutical environment involving dispensing for a minimum of 1 year.
  • Further education qualifications
  • Experience of working within a secure environment
  • Evidence of working within a ‘value for money’ service
  • Driving License.
