The Department of Surgery & Cancer, Division of IRDB wishes to appoint a new academic at Lecturer level, with expertise in Glycosciences.
We are seeking to hear from outstanding candidates with a record of accomplishment of high quality research and publications in Glycosciences, in particular glycan recognition studies through development of state-of-the-art carbohydrate microarrays to address glycan-protein interactions in infection, inflammation, innate immunity and cancer.
The world-renowned Glycosciences Laboratory, directed by Professor Ten Feizi, houses the Carbohydrate Microarray Facility of Imperial College, which has been a unique resource for collaborative research with the broad scientific community. The facility grew from several decades of earlier work by Professor Feizi, which established the principles of glycan arrays in 2002. In 2018 the Glycosciences Laboratory joined IRDB and became a central element of the European Preterm Birth Research Centre Award from the March of Dimes to Imperial College IRDB.
Duties and responsibilities
The appointee will drive forward ground-breaking research in microbiome-host interactions in preterm birth as part of the Centre Award. The post holder will embrace the College Strategy in all respects including maintaining world-class core academic disciplines, encouraging multidisciplinary research and providing a supportive and innovative environment for both undergraduate and postgraduate education.
The post holder will direct the Carbohydrate Array Facility as a resource for multidisciplinary collaborative research nationally and internationally.
In addition, the post holder will provide future leadership for the Glycosciences Laboratory, expand established links and create new links across the College, particularly with other groups in the Department of Surgery and Cancer, the National Heart and Lung Institute in the Faculty of Medicine, and with the Departments of Chemistry and Life Sciences in the Faculty of Natural Sciences.
The post holder will take a leading role in developing multidisciplinary research programmes in understanding the roles of glycans in a range of communicable and non-communicable diseases.
The appointee will:

Undertake teaching duties to an internationally excellent standard.
Publish in high quality scientific journals.
Successfully attract funds for research and project initiatives.
Supervise research staff and students.
Support areas of Divisional management in line with their skills, experience and interests.
Contribute to public engagement and outreach activities.
Candidates should hold a PhD or equivalent in chemistry, biochemistry, or glycobiology and have a growing reputation in the field of Glycoscience, demonstrated by publications in national/international leading journals. Extensive experience in glycan microarray technologies and comprehensive knowledge in glycobiology, glycan analysis and carbohydrate chemistry are essential. Previous experience in studying microbe-host interactions, and in leading collaborative research projects in a facility is advantageous.
The post is full time and open-ended.
