The most powerful method for determining the structure of proteins is X-ray crystallography which is totally reliant on the availability of high quality crystals. However, the production of useful crystals has always been, and still remains, the bottleneck to structure determination.

There is no ‘magic bullet’ that will guarantee the yield of good crystals, hence rational approaches leading to the development of new and improved technologies for obtaining high quality crystals is of crucial importance to progress. 

The Chayen group is engaged with designing new and improved techniques of crystallization to overcome the bottleneck of producing crystals for the purpose of drug design.

Duties and responsibilities

The aims of the post is to work in the Chayen group to design new and improved methods of crystallization, to test and validate them and to apply them to the crystallization of therapeutic targets.

Essential requirements

The successful candidate will be expected to help to define specific research programmes within this remit and undertake them in conjunction with colleagues and collaborators.

Some level of independence will be expected and postholder will be expected to contribute to writing reports, conference and/or refereed journal papers. There will also be opportunities for supervision of students.

The contract is part-time 7 hours per week (20% FTE) on a fixed term contract until 31 December 2019.
