The Department of Surgery and Cancer at Imperial College London seeks to appoint a Lecturer/ Senior Lecturer in Translational Critical Care based at the Chelsea & Westminster Campus. The post will be full-time and open-ended (subject to 3-Year probationary period).
Acute/Critical care is one of the priority areas for clinical academic training being supported by the NIHR and the Division of Surgery, including the Section of Anaesthetics, Pain Medicine and Intensive Care (APMIC). In recent years, critical care research at Imperial has expanded from mainly laboratory-based studies on the Chelsea and Westminster (C&W) campus into more translational research, and clinical trials at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (ICHT), resulting in high impact publications and major grant funding, including award of a prestigious NIHR Research Professorship. In the recent Centre for World University Rankings, critical care at Imperial was ranked 9th in the world and the top centre outside of North America.
This post is the next stage of this ongoing academic initiative to further strengthen academic anaesthesia and critical care within the Imperial Academic Health Science Centre (AHSC).
Duties and responsibilities
Supporting the Chair in Anaesthesia and Critical Care (Prof Gordon), you will support the establishment of a wider research team that will further raise the profile of clinical academic anaesthesia and critical care within Imperial, enhancing its reputation nationally as well as internationally. You will build on the current strong basic science research within the Section of Anaesthetics, Pain Medicine & Intensive Care (APMIC) of Imperial College, to help translate this work from the bench to the bedside. As well as strengthening the ongoing critical care research, you will help expand research into trauma and peri-operative medicine. Ultimately, the aim will be to improve peri-operative and critical care medicine, providing patients with enhanced recovery and better outcomes.
All members of academic staff are expected to be active in research, publishing papers in leading journals, attending conferences, teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate taught course students, supervising research students and obtaining funding to support their students and research activities. You will be expected to have a record in such activities. The post will involve the usual administrative duties and you will be expected to enhance the academic standing of the Department of Surgery and Cancer.
You will have a PhD in a relevant scientific field. You should be able to demonstrate a developing track record of publishing in national and international peer-reviewed journals and of attracting independent research funding or fellowships. Experience in teaching and postgraduate supervision will be essential.
