Job summary

The recent award (commenced 1st December 2018) of CRUK Major Centre funding for the ICR-Imperial Convergence Science Centre, led by Professor Paul Workman FRS and Professor Ara Darzi FRS, to the Institute of Cancer Research and Imperial College, London creates an exciting opportunity for the appointment of the first Director of Operations.

You will play a leading role in the running of the Convergence Science Centre by providing vision, strategic direction and leadership of its operations. With Professors Workman and Darzi and the Scientific Director, currently being recruited, you will form the executive team of the Centre.

Imperial College (IC) and the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) have a shared vision to create a world-leading Centre, harnessing each partner’s complementary expertise, to establish a leadership role in convergence cancer research. Together the partners will bridge the interface between biomedical science and the engineering and physical sciences to drive innovation in cancer medicine and to deliver a step change in research that address unmet medical needs in all cancers including those that are hard to treat.

Duties and responsibilities

You will be expected to work for the best interests of both partners requiring credibility with both academic staff and management to maximise engagement of scientists and clinicians across both organisations in an innovative and expanding cancer convergence science programme. You will be responsible for building an effective organisation and collaborative networks ensuring that our world-class researchers are in the best position to succeed.  You will lead the development and management of the operational aspects of the Centre and will require a pro-active and nimble approach to overcoming process barriers anticipated working across the two institutions.

Essential requirements

You will have a detailed understanding of cancer research and convergence science nationally and internationally. You will be a strategic thinker able to demonstrate development and delivery of (inter-)institutional frameworks and will have experience of working with high profile funders.  You should have experience of setting up and managing institutional governance structures and have extensive experience in research or education management in a higher education institution, the NHS or public sector/commercial body/charitable sector/industry.  You will have unquestionable personal integrity and the confidence to take forward such an exciting and transformative opportunity.

Further information

The post is full time and open-ended.

The Convergence Science Centre will have a physical base at Imperial’s South Kensington Campus. This post will be based there and also at the ICR with frequent travel required across Imperial and ICR campuses.

A decision as to the employing authority (ICR or Imperial College) will be taken after discussion with the successful candidate.  Candidates should be aware that CVs will be shared across both institutions.

Interview date: 10th-17th June
