What it's about

The Research and Thought Leadership group at Cambridge Assessment English are recruiting a Projects Assistant to join our expert team. The Projects Assistant provides support across the group's activities and will be involved in a range of applied research projects. The topics we explore include language assessment, language learning, education reform, corpus linguistics, large-scale survey research, and teacher development. This is a great opportunity to experience various educational research methods and forms of analysis, working with a multidisciplinary team. The post would suit someone who is organised, proactive when communicating and managing tasks, and interested in developing their existing technical capabilities further. The successful applicant will manage data and research processes to help ensure that our work helps people learn English and prove their skills to the world. The research work conducted by the group is specialised and training and development opportunities will be provided.

What you'll be doing

You will join a diverse team of experts in language testing, learning oriented assessment, and educational measurement, and collaborate with colleagues from across the organisation to ensure the quality and validity of Cambridge Assessment English products and services.
  • Supporting research projects by carrying out organisation, administration and technical tasks (e.g. drafting correspondence, monitoring project status and deliverables, managing consultants and data collection, preparing data for analysis).
  • Developing and managing databases/systems to track research projects, reports and presentations.
  • Organising and carrying out administrative tasks to support maintenance of corpora.
  • Developing ways to present tracking data that will support monitoring of departmental performance.
  • Carrying out initial qualitative (e.g. coding, running text-processing software) and quantitative analysis tasks (preparing charts, frequency counts, cross-tabulations) to support the work of research teams.
  • Running corpus queries to support research and inform exam materials.

What we're looking for

  • A degree in a topic area relevant to language education (e.g. TESOL, education, linguistics, psychology) or computing (e.g. information technology, computer science).
  • A postgraduate degree in a topic area relevant to language education (e.g. TESOL, education, linguistics, psychology) or computing (e.g. information technology, computer science) is desirable.

  • Ability to work as part of a team and good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure by prioritising and time-managing tasks.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to learn how to use new software, systems and methods of analysis quickly.
  • Ability to work with qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Technical capabilities related to data management are desirable (e.g. highly competent with MS Excel; ability to use MS Access or other relational database systems).

  • Experience of managing a varied workload and multi-tasking.
  • Experience of working in a project-based role or environment; experience of project management is desirable.
  • Familiarity with less common Microsoft tools (e.g. Sharepoint, MS Teams, MS Access, Power BI) and working with databases (e.g. MS Access) is desirable.
  • Experience of conducting data analysis in research settings is desirable.
  • Experience of working with a corpus/corpora is desirable.
