As part of this, our community (physical health) services in Bury, Oldham, Rochadale (adult services) and Trafford will be moving to a new NHS Provider in 2019. For Bury, Oldham, Rochdale (adult services) this will take place on 1 July 2019.

We have been very proud to run community (physical health) services over the last seven years, but we believe there are other provider organisations better positioned to enable these community services to achieve more for the benefit of local people. We are working closely with our staff and colleagues in the new provider organisations to ensure the smoothest possible transfer.

Service/Ward/Department Summary:

The post is based with the Psychological Medicine in Primary Care Service, in Stockport.

The broad aim of 'Psychological Medicine in Primary Care' is to help support Primary Care and local Improving Access to Psychological Therapy (IAPT) services (Healthy Minds) to improve the care of those with medically unexplained symptoms, long-term conditions and complex psychological/ psychiatric difficulties. The aim is to bridge the gap between physical and mental health care and primary and secondary care.

This will involve developing 2 main strands:

  • Continuing to work with groups of GP practices across the borough of Stockport providing education, supervision and consultation for people with persistent physical symptoms and personally-related difficulties. The role will also link in with local IAPT services.


  • An educational component evaluating and developing the skills of health and social staff across the borough of Stockport in this clinical area. This includes IAPT staff and primary care staff.


The role will include implementation, delivery and evaluation of the service by working closely with the other clinicians and managers involved and supported by the Psychological Medicine Service.

Role Summary:

The post holder will work with the other consultant, already in post, to provide medical input to assessment, formulation, and ongoing care of people open to PMPC. This will include liaising with colleagues in the integrated hubs, and primary care clinicians to provide collaborative care to individuals within the service. The post holder will be expected to be actively involved with service development and evaluation, in addition to training and supervision both within the service and to the wider health and social care system.

Responsibilities of the Post:

  • Clinical


The post holder will provide consultation-liaison with a number of GP practices and IAPT services across Stockport using a collaborative care model. This will be for patients with medically unexplained symptoms, long-term conditions and complex psychological/psychiatric difficulties. This will include those with high levels of complexity who may be at high risk of harm, on complex poly-pharmacy and where diagnosis/formulation is needed. Outcomes are a key performance indicator. The service is for patients aged 16 and over.

  • Liaison


The post holder will liaise with Primary Care clinicians and managers and Primary (IAPT) and Secondary Care Mental Health Services (including substance misuse services) amongst others. This will involve supervision and case discussion with Primary Care and IAPT staff. There will also be liaison with clinicians working in primary care, GPs, practice nursing staff and community healthcare staff.

  • Education & training


This will involve identifying the learning needs of Primary Care and Primary Care Mental Health staff and others and developing a suitable educational and training approach to be delivered in a variety of formats and settings. Supervision of primary care staff, including GPs, and IAPT staff is key feature. Evaluation and activity of this are key performance indicators.

  • Management


The post holder will attend relevant project planning meetings as well as other Pennine Care and CCG/ Stockport Together events that support the delivery of the project.

  • Service Development


The post holder will take an active role in developing this area of work with the support of the team lead, rest of the team, IAPT services, the Psychological Medicine Service, Pennine Care and local commissioners.

  • Evaluation


Clinician and patient rated outcome measures, patient rated experience measures and health care utilization data will be collected. The amount and impact of educational activity will be evaluated. This will be done with the support of existing Pennine Care and CCG structures

Key Requirements of the Person Specification:

Fully registered with the GMC with a license to practice at the time of appointment.

Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months.

Approved Clinician status OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment

Approved under S12 OR able to achieve with 3 months of appointment

MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.

Excellent knowledge in liaison psychiatry including knowledge and experience of a range of medically unexplained conditions and long-term conditions with complex psychological problems

Evidence of experience and knowledge of a range of psychological interventions for this patient group

Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge

Excellent oral and written communication skills in English

Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty

Makes decisions based on evidence and experience including the contribution of others

Able to meet duties under MHA and MCA

Able to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training

Participated in continuous professional development

Participated in research or service evaluation.

Able to use and appraise clinical evidence.

Has actively participated in clinical audit.

All new starters to Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust who are appointed to a post which requires a Disclosure Barring Certificate check (DBS) will be recharged for the full cost of the check. Substantive staff can choose to spread the cost over their first three months' salary or pay the full amount from their first months' salary. Members to the Trust bank must repay the full amount from their first pay. The Trust encourages all staff and bank workers to register with the DBS update service at an annual cost of £13, for bank members this is obligatory. The cost of an enhanced DBS check is £44 and for a standard check £26, both attract an administration charge of £3.50.
