Diplomatic Strategy and Engagement, Communications and Stakeholder Directorate

Our team

The overarching objective of the Communications and Stakeholder Directorate is to deliver an effective communications and engagement effort that strengthens the UK position in negotiations with the EU.  Diplomatic Strategy and Engagement leads on diplomatic engagement and public communications into Europe and setting the strategic direction for EU engagement.  The scale and complexity of the future relationship negotiations, and need for parallel engagement on No Deal planning and on-going EU business, make engaging with the EU a uniquely challenging and interesting task.

Policy Adviser, EU Engagement Strategy Team

We are looking for two Policy Advisers to join our strategy team, which plans the shape and direction of the UK’s engagement effort in Europe in the short and longer-term.  Working closely with the (G6) Head of Diplomatic Strategy, (G7) Team Leaders and other Policy Advisers, your role will be to help develop the substance and processes needed to deliver coherent, prioritised whole-of-Government engagement across the EU.

You’ll also play your part turning this into reality, working collaboratively with UKRep and across Whitehall, and finding creative solutions to new and unexpected obstacles as they appear.  You will be resilient and comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment with a shifting political and strategic context.  The specifics of the two roles are as follows:

Policy Adviser, European Parliament

You will join the EU Institutions team of Diplomatic Strategy and Engagement to lead on the European Parliament.  This will require you to develop rapid expertise on the processes and politics of this institution. Previous experience of working in Brussels is desirable for this role. You will analyse and report on developments in the European Parliament; advise on HMG’s engagement with MEPs and prepare briefings for ministers and senior officials. You will work closely with the FCO to share intelligence and produce joint products, as well as contribute to the work of the wider engagement unit.

Policy Adviser, Whitehall Stakeholder Management

You will join EU engagement policy team of Diplomatic Strategy and Engagement.  Our team helps shape HMG's approach to EU-facing diplomatic engagement and communications and its delivery.  You will focus on cross-Whitehall coordination - a role which is hugely important to our overall planning.

You will need to be confident developing and managing relationships across Whitehall, and to feel comfortable advising colleagues in other Departments.  You will use information gathered from your Whitehall relationships to contribute to analysis documents and engagement advice to ministers and senior officials and longer-term strategy.
