The Company

We are a London-based startup looking to disrupt the children's publishing and educational technology markets with an ambition to grow into a global children's brand. We were founded in 2018 by Kate Boyle, a London-based writer and storyteller and the current team includes experienced entrepreneurs and scale up specialists and are part of the London 2019 Techstars cohort. Our purpose as an organisation is to make learning to write fun for children around the world and we are looking for individuals who want to help us deliver that.

The Product

Banjo Robinson is a magical globetrotting cat who sends real, personalised letters and goodies to children, twice a month, from exciting destinations like the Taj Mahal, the Great Wall of China, and the Northern Lights of Iceland.
The idea is that it's a little bit like writing to Father Christmas, except all year round: kids write back to Banjo using the stationery and stickers provided and leave their replies under the sofa for overnight collection by 'Cat Mail'. Letters are personalised with details about each child's interests - their favourite food, hobbies etc., and more often than not, Banjo just happens to be best pals with their pet ;)
Customer sign up to our subscription service and their children receive letters through the post twice a month. We currently have 3, 6 and 12 month subscriptions available (alongside gift products)

Our Platform

We are currently using a Shopify-based platform to sell our subscription products (with Recharge / Stripe for recurring payments) and a custom built web portal handling our back end print process.
Over the coming year we have 2 key priorities for development:
● Phase 1​ - rapidly iterate and improve the current site; we will be rapidly developing the current website / stack to optimise UX and conversion, add more engaging content and new products as they come online. We also need to ensure our web portal accurately and consistently exports data for use in the print process and BI
● Phase 2​ - develop version 2.0 of the site, assess requirements and build out new stack in line with growth plans (e.g. International markets, new product pipeline) to be fit for purpose through rapid growth.

The Role

We are looking for a technical lead to develop our technology roadmap and team, plus own execution from requirements gathering through to deployment, becoming a key member of our leadership team. Ideally they would be a full stack developer with strong product experience who wants to help us develop Banjo Robinson into a global brand, utilising technology to provide an immersive and highly personalised experience for both parents and children. The ideal candidate will have experience working with Shopify (jQuery, Liquid and Shopify themes) but also have the knowledge and experience to identify and assess the best technologies for us to use in the future. This individual would need to be based primarily in our office in Old Street, London - no remote only working.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

● Take overall responsibility for our technology strategy and execution
● Work closely with the rest of the team (Marketing, Operations, Creative) to build the
development roadmap, identifying and recording requirements and developing key
features
● Develop a technology team (both in house and outsourced where applicable) to deliver
the roadmap as well
● Ensure our technology both optimises the purchasing experience for customers and
delivers a reliable operational platform for the team and our external partners
● Comfortable working in an agile, fast paced software development environment
● Follow coding standards and best practice within the development cycle and code review
processes.
● Optimise page load performance by optimising HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images and
content delivery.
● Complete development work required on each project in line with the development
roadmap/release plan.
● Identify and escalate areas for technical improvement of back end processes.
● Ad hoc technical support, testing on releases.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications

● Highly organised with the capability to multi-task and prioritise to meet tight deadlines.

● Experience of recruiting a high performing technical team

● Willing to adapt and take on new challenges and driven to continually improve.
● Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
● Proven HTML (5), CSS (3), and JavaScript development experience.
● Experience of jQuery, Liquid and Shopify themes/templating.
● Good knowledge of modern frontend frameworks and libraries, including but not limited to React, Vue, Polymer etc.
● Good knowledge of JavaScript best practices and standards, including experience of linting and static analysis tools.
● Strong debugging and testing skills to help us achieve a 'bug-zero' site.
● Good knowledge of version control, Git and associated workflows (Git Flow, Git modules
etc).
● Experience developing responsive applications across a wide range of devices
● Previous experience working directly on ecommerce websites and building and
maintaining API integrations.
● Strong awareness of design, with an emphasis on creating a solid but fun experience for
a family audience.
● Strong understanding of ecommerce concepts and UX.
● Experience of working within a lean environment beneficial.
