Who are we?

Part political, partly business and part charity - NUS is a third sector membership organisation with a twist! The student movement in the UK is made up of 500 students' unions and 7 million students. NUS sits at the heart of this movement, delivering a national student voice and supporting local students' unions to grow. We've been going through some big changes this year, so this is a particularly exciting time to join us. Expect fast-paced delivery alongside conversations about new ways of doing things in the future.

What's the opportunity?

These volunteer roles are all about encouraging participation in elections, ensuring free and fair elections at NUS and providing the means for voters to make well informed decisions.

We've recently reformed the democracy of NUS and have some key ambitions to engage under-represented groups in NUS elections and champion digital participation in NUS Democracy.

We are looking for a Chief Returning Officer and Deputy Returning Officer excited by the opportunity to work with us during this period of change to help us run elections, interpret Articles and set/implement election rules.

Who you are

You'll be a leader who is committed to encouraging participation in democracy and able to make robust, fair decisions.

You'll definitely be up for the exciting challenge of working in a dynamic environment where significant changes are being made to democratic structures.

You'll have an understanding of elections and voting

With collaboration at the heart of your approach you'll be excited to use your communications skills to build strong working relationships with NUS staff and volunteers

You'll be confident to interpret rules, set regulations and make rulings.

Your personal values will mean you carry out your work with fairness and impartiality, and demonstrating your commitment to equality and diversity.

As a valued volunteer you will get the chance to work with a variety of different people from different walks of life and make a real difference to students lives.

This is a really exciting time to join NUS as a volunteer. In these roles you will get hands on experience working with students and young people and experiencing one of the largest student organisations in the world. You'll have the opportunity to pioneer new approaches & techniques in election practise and to keep aware of the latest in political thought and debate.

You'll get the induction, ongoing training you need and a key staff to provide support. You will also be reimbursed for reasonable out-of-pocket expenses.

We're committed to equality of opportunity for all. We welcome applications from individuals regardless of their race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, age, gender, or disability.

Whoever you are, if you're looking for a volunteer role a bit out of the ordinary, we'd love to hear from you.
