Young Refugee Project Volunteer

Location: Aztec Row, London, N1 0PW

Commitment: This role requires volunteers who are available 3 hours a week on Mondays 5.30-8.30pm. Minimum of two Mondays a month. Minimum 6 month commitment

Volunteers needed for the RnB project - a befriending project which aims to equip young refugees with life skills, reduce social isolation and build independence. Volunteers must be over 16 and be able to easily travel to Lewisham. Project number P7776.

About the role

One of the vulnerable groups we work with is young refugees who are children and young people aged 15 up to 25 seeking safety. Our work helps young people to understand what they are entitled to and develops their skills to cope with their situation and to know what to do next.

As a Young Refugee Project Volunteer you will be involved in a range of activities helping children and young people adjust to life in a new country. You will have the opportunity to offer valuable professional trusting support in a group learning setting. Also to help them find their way in a town to ensure they get the support they need.

Every year thousands of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants arrive in the UK with little support, money, or opportunities. Sometimes these people don't even have the means to find and contact their loved ones back home. It's our job to do what we can to help.

We're a diverse, busy team dotted all over the country who share the common goal of doing what we can to make refugee lives that little bit brighter. From providing emotional support to reuniting families, we're committed to helping as many people as we can in as many ways as we can. Seeing the look on someone's face when they are put back in contact with a partner, parent, or child, that they thought they'd never see again is simply priceless.

About the person

You need to have good interpersonal, diplomacy, communication and teamwork skills although full training will be given for any technical requirements. Also someone who is:
  • A good communicator and empathetic about the situation and needs of young people and young refugees
  • Awareness of conflict and migration issues and sensitive to cultural issues, including those relating to gender
  • Able to use emotional support skills in a calm and responsible manner
  • Caring, supportive, helpful with a non-judgemental attitude and able to instil and maintain confidences
  • Personally resilient as you may need to deal with difficult or challenging situations
  • Enthusiastic about youth, learning and integration
  • Able to keep the service user at the heart of what you do, supporting the Red Cross to understand service user needs and the difference our role makes
  • Able to speak good English; plus knowledge of a foreign language would be useful (particularly one used in the current local refugee population)
  • This role requires a criminal record check to the appropriate level.
  • Willing to uphold the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and adhere to the Society's Equal Opportunities Policy

Tasks included in this Role:
  • Helping to organise group activities to improve life skills and local knowledge, working with the project coordinators. This could include helping service users on organised trips
  • Providing friendly support to young people working within boundaries to act in a 'professional' supportive and a role model relationship
  • Offering the opportunity to improve language skills and confidence through conversation and activities
  • Offering the opportunity to prepare, cook and socially interact with young people to encourage eating healthily
  • Supporting young people find opportunities to nurture their interests and talents, encouraging engagement and accompanying young people to events and activities
  • Collating resources or providing other administrative tasks
