Job description

You will join a small and friendly Private Office and will be working as part of a close knit and friendly group of Private Offices that depend on strong teamwork, keeping abreast of wider priorities across the ministerial team with the ability to effectively reprioritise when needed. 

To do this effectively and provide full support to your Principal, you will be expected to develop a working knowledge across directorates of policy and delivery coordination/contingency planning, EU exit related legislation, international agreements and trade, parliamentary business and stakeholder engagement. 

You will be a key interface between your Principal, wider Private Office, policy officials and external stakeholders in terms of the prioritisation and management of their time.


Policy advice 
In this role you will have responsibility for a policy portfolio, and will work with policy teams to ensure that your Principal receives timely and high quality advice, to enable your Principal to make decisions and provide steers. 

Building relationships 
You will be expected to build relationships with officials across the department and Whitehall, at a variety of grades. In this role you will have regular contact with senior officials, and confidence, assertiveness and strong communication skills will be pivotal. You will accompany your Principal on stakeholder visits, and will have the confidence and professionalism to represent the department on these occasions. 

A core component of Private Office work is to ensure the processes for transparency returns, FOIs, managing invitations and events and running the office are efficient and well understood.
