Main Purpose of job

The Family Support Worker will support the fostering household and children and young people in placement according to their needs as defined by the Placement Plan and subsequently identified, under the guidance and oversight of the supervising social worker/area manager. The overall aim will be to enhance placement stability and positive relationships within the fostering household within which children and young people can make progress and feel secure.

Support may be given to the carer or the child/young person in meeting those aims.

The post may be general, or linked to the delivery of a specified agency service and defined by the schedules and scope of that service.

Duties may include fulfilling regulatory tasks that are not required to be managed by a qualified social worker but will inform the work of the social work team.

Main Duties
  • Work closely with the Supervising Social Worker to deliver support to foster carers and foster placements through a range of interventions which may include but is not restricted to:
  • Direct work with the child in one-to -one relationships and in support of participation in activity which is beneficial to them
  • Planning direct sessions with children and young people based on their individual needs
  • Communication with the allocated supervising social worker of developments, risks, progress and events in order to inform planning for the child and young person and for their needs to be met
  • Programmes of work identified in Care Plans and other formal forums
  • Day-care activity to provide respite to the placement
  • Preparation for independence work
  • Attendance with the carer and child/young person to appointments etc. where a second adult may be of value
  • Attendance where required and contribution to meetings in respect of the child or young person, including provision of written reports and contribution to safeguarding plans and risk assessment
  • Working flexible hours, including non-office hours and at weekends, to support children and young people outside of school hours
  • Complete initial visits to households expressing an interest in fostering
  • Contribute to planning activity days for foster carer families and children and young people and attend and participate in these
  • Complete the annual statutory unannounced visits to approved fostering households as requested

Additional Responsibilities:

The FSW may be allocated specific duties according to the needs of a placement. These include but are not restricted to:
  • Direct work with the child as directed by a clinical team - e.g. targeted interventions to address behavioural issues, self-harm or social isolation
  • Visits and telephone contact with foster carers according to defined schedules
  • Maintenance of recordings according to specific guidance for the task
  • One-to-one support to young people within the community in a recreational context to promote and practice pro-social behaviour and problem-solving skills.
  • Support a young person's progress in the Nexus Fostering 360 foster placement through working with them in the community, in leisure activities or at school, within a therapeutic framework. Specifically, to provide one to one support to children and young people

Family Support Workers engage in direct, focussed work with children to build positive relationships with a child, model acceptable behaviour and help the child to trust and feel safe with adults.

As individual Team Member:
  • Undertake practical tasks relating to making and supporting placements, whether allocated within a caseload or not, if it is possible and appropriate to do so
  • Work co-operatively and supportively with colleagues to deliver a high quality fostering service
  • Respond to all callers or foster carers with respect and with a view to helping resolve their query to an acceptable level
  • Take part in team organised activities e.g. for recruitment, participation, social and celebratory, as required.
  • Act at all times in accordance with the Data Protection Act 2019 to protect privacy and to store, share and dispose of personal information securely and with regard to consequence
  • Take reasonable care for the health and safety of self and others under relevant legislation, including 'Lone Working' at home and in the workplace and the agency's no smoking policy
  • Undertake any other duties that could reasonably fall within the scope of this post resulting from (but not limited to) agency or policy development, new legislation or changes in technology and to take part in appropriate training to undertake such work
