We are looking looking for a new trustee to both join the Board and be the Chair of our Finance Committee. If you share our vision of an education system where every child can thrive ad have in depth knowledge of financial issues, we'd love to hear from you.

As Chair of the Finance Committee, main responsibilities include:
  • Oversee the financial leadership of the charity, on behalf of the Board of Trustees, to ensure its short and long-term viability.
  • Assist the Chair, Trustees and the Chief Executive in ensuring that the Board fulfils its duties and responsibilities for the proper financial governance of the charity.

Trustee responsibilities:

The statutory duties of a trustee are:
  • Ensure that the charity has a clear vision, mission and strategic direction and is focused on achieving these.
  • Be responsible for the performance of the charity, ensuring that the charity complies with all legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Act as guardians of the charity's assets, both tangible and intangible, taking all due care over their security, deployment and proper application.
  • Ensure the organisation complies with its governing document and applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objectives.
  • Contribute actively to the Board of Trustees' role in giving clear strategic direction to the organisation, setting overall policy, defining goals and setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets.
  • Safeguard the reputation and values of the organisation.
  • Ensure effective and efficient use of the organisation's resources.
  • Ensure the financial stability of the organisation.
  • Protect and manage the property of the organisation and to ensure the proper investment of the organisation's funds.

Person Specification

All Trustees must meet Charity Commission eligibility criteria.

Experience, Knowledge & Skills
  • Commitment to Ambition Institute's mission and strategy
  • Financial and commercial expertise
  • Understanding of charity governance and finance requirements including the SORP
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship skills
  • Good, independent judgement
  • Ability to think creatively and work collegiately
  • Understanding of charity governance and requirements

Time Commitment
  • Trustees need to attend four Board meetings a year; the Finance Committee also meets four times a year, and there are additionally four meetings between Committee chairs each year.
  • Attendance at one or two away days each year.
  • The appointment will be for a four-year term, which can be followed by a second term, up to a maximum of eight years in total.
  • Meetings are held at Ambition Institute's London office.


This role is an unremunerated voluntary position, but reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed.
