We're looking to recruit someone special , with a passion and knowledge of nature and its conservation and the outdoors who has a flair for creating effective working partnerships and able to deliver the Trust's strategy across a range of very special places in an exciting and lively way

You will be responsible for setting the direction, leading a great team, potential acquisitions and large projects over the coming years. This includes taking our strategy for nature to the next level at places that are already international exemplars for landscape scale conservation. You will need to demonstrate both vision and an ability to translate this into delivery through working with your team and an extensive network of partners . In addition you will have a sound customer service and commercial sense and seek out and create new opportunities for active engagement and increased income.

What it's like to work here

The Lizard & Penrose is principally a countryside property of wide ranging character which includes the dramatic coastline of The Lizard Peninsula , the woodlands and banks of the Helford river, extensive farmland especially on the Penrose estate near Helston which at its heart lies Loe Pool, Cornwalls largest freshwater lake .

A dedicated team of staff and volunteers look after the special places in our care. There are over 1800 hectares of land including part of a National Nature reserve and Sites of Special Scientific Interest reflecting the significant priority attached to managing nature across the portfolio

With a unique landscape and wildlife the portfolio is popular with locals and a busy place for tourists drawn by the beautiful coastline , beaches and extensive network of footpaths and honeypot sites like Mullion Harbour , Kynance Cove and Lizard Point which attract hundreds of thousands of visitors .

There is a diverse mix of commercial activities to manage which include beach cafes, busy car parks , a campsite and 16 holiday cottages .In addition there are more than 30 residential lets and farm tenancies and more than 50 other assorted buildings and structures to maintain and care for .

The Lizard and Penrose team places a strong emphasis on partnership working with a strong track record of establishing beneficial relationships .We work closely with other organisations ( statutory and non statutory ), local communities, tenants and leaseholders to help look after the special places in our care. As such we have a high profile locally and this way of working will always be a priority for us

What you'll be doing

As well as having an eye on the day to day, you will have a plan for the future in line with the national and regional strategy. You'll be part of a successful wider GM team across the South West, you'll work with our internal Consultancy and external partners to achieve our goals and champion the National Trust cause. You'll manage a number of Heads of Department requiring a positive, can-do attitude , and your motivational style will inspire and enable them to deliver outstanding results across all areas of the portfolio, in order to generate the funds to invest back into further conservation .

Who we're looking for

You must be someone who is able to drive and direct change through enabling your team to be the best they can be. Partnership working will come naturally to you and you'll have had some experience of this to build on . You'll also be someone who is passionate about and understands the benefits of landscape scale conservation. We also have some ambitious visitor and revenue targets so you'll need to have solid financial capability.

With a wide range of skills in your toolkit, you'll need to demonstrate the following skills and experience:
  • A forward-thinking approach to managing your multi-site portfolio, you'll be highly visible to both your staff and volunteers and able to share your vision in a clear and compelling way
  • Both conservation and commercially minded, you'll have an understanding of what makes a great visitor experience and will be keen to make sure your high standards are evident across the whole portfolio.
  • An accomplished decision-maker and natural collaborator, adept at building effective working relationships with a wide variety of people including commercial partners, tenants, and within the National Trust consultancy colleagues
  • Alive to opportunities but able to manage reputational and commercial risk
  • A confident communicator
  • A natural motivator and coach with an ability to set stretching targets and drive performance, helping your Heads of Department achieve their full potential
  • Adept at prioritising and the sort of person who can keep a cool head while balancing the urgent with the important
  • Able to focus energy and resources not just on where we can improve the most, but on how we ensure all our supporters feel valued, invested in and care passionately about our work

The package

Salary £40,071 - £42,629 pa
