This special school in Taunton is looking for an LSA to work with a class that caters mostly for KS3 and KS4 students with autism. Their autism can range from low functioning non-verbal students to high functioning autism where students can be in high levels of anxiety.

One of the main aims of this role is to support students with their emotional and social well-being needs so we welcome applicants from a care background. Some of the students are new to the school and will have come from a mainstream background. So will need extra support in managing that transition.

Responsibilities and duties:
  • Supporting students with their learning and development
  • Helping students to learn self-regulation techniques, though a lot of guidance and support will be required
  • Supporting the children's emotional development, which may be below their peers
  • Helping to develop social skills
  • Keeping children engaged with their work
  • Communicating with parents/caregivers to maintain a consistent and informed approach

Essential Criteria:
  • 1 year of recent experience supporting children with SEND or Vulnerable Younger adults
  • Understanding and patient
  • Adaptable and able to use your initiative
  • Confident to work with children who have autism
  • Knowledge of the Key Stage 3 and 4 curriculum would be an advantage but not essential
  • Available to work 5 days a week, 8:30-3:30
  • Have a right to work in the UK (A Valid Visa)
  • At least one recent child-based reference and relevant DBS/ Police checks
  • Have knowledge of Autism friendly approaches such as 'Now and Next’, Social Stories and PECS (Picture exchange communication system)
  • Knowledge of strategies to help with sensory overload.
