About the Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Mental Health Nurse to contribute to the provision of an integrated, effective and professional wellbeing service for Further and Higher Education students.

As a mental health nurse, your role would include:
  • Complete psychosocial assessments for students presenting with a wide range of Mental Health challenges whilst helping students manage their emotions through evidence based techniques
  • Assess risk and plan care and interventions collaboratively with the student, the wider team, parents and academic staff, making sure that the legal requirements appropriate to a particular setting or group of students are observed
  • Build therapeutic relationships with students to encourage trust, while listening to and interpreting their needs and concerns
  • Provide education to academic and other support staff to reduce the stigma around Mental Health
  • Have knowledge of local NHS and other mental health services and their referral pathways

About You

You need to be a registered nurse with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) to work as a Mental Health Nurse in the UK. You must hold a Higher National Diploma or Degree in Nursing Studies/Mental Health and have a good understanding of the theories of mental health and illness.

You will need to demonstrate:
  • Experience in undertaking complex mental health and risk assessments and care planning collaboratively with young people and their families
  • A non-judgmental approach when working with students and have great empathetic skills
  • Work within NMC code of conduct
  • A great understanding of confidentiality and the challenges that can arise when working with young people
  • the ability to stay calm and think quickly in challenging circumstances
  • The ability to recognise safeguarding concerns and follow the correct process to report and record concerns and help others overcome social stigma related to mental health
  • Experience of using Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for depression and anxiety would be desirable.
