Home-based School Data Protection Consultant - Flexible working/Term Time
Please note: Whilst we will try, we aren't able to contact everyone who applies. If you haven't heard from us before the Christmas holiday, then I'm sorry, but I regret we won't be taking your application forward. So please read the advert carefully and make sure that you have the skills and experience we're looking for. This isn't a fishing expedition for us - we've hired three of our time through MumsNet.
Also - please only respond via this advert. Please do not contact us directly as it will only harm your chances of success.
Our flexible working environment
We are open to short-term and long-term, full-time, part-time and term-time-only. In work and looking for a change or looking to get back into work after a break? - for us, it's about the right person who can add something to the team.
Where we are based
Though we have an office in Hertfordshire, all our consultants are home-based. We understand that you might not be available every day, nor every hour of every day - indeed we hope that you can manage your own schedule.
You will manage your own time based on your allocation of customers that you will be working with, alongside any other tasks, such as answering questions, writing best practice documentation etc. Our schools are mostly located in the South-East and East of England, however, we have more coming onboard in the Midlands and North of England in 2021.
We are especially interested in (though not exclusively) in someone to help out with our schools in Norfolk.
Currently, all our consultations and support is remote and delivered online or on the phone. Post-pandemic, we expect to start school visits once more.
About us and what we offer:
Data Protection Education is a specialist consultancy providing GDPR tools, resources and consultancy to schools. We work with individual schools, trusts, federations and local authorities to provide data protection services, including outsourced data protection officer services.
- We will provide tools and admin support so that you can concentrate on delivery and we share responsibility for knowledge across our consultants so you never feel out of your depth.
- We are able to offer training if you have experience in other areas of school management and we support our school consultants on gaining an internationally recognised certification in data protection
- We are able to offer term-time contracts and would be happy to discuss full-time and part-time availability.
We are open to hiring more than one person to get the blend of skills - so if there is part of this that interests you, please get in touch.
About the project
Data Protection Education is a business providing GDPR and data protection services to schools. This includes a school data protection officer service, consultancy and training. Our team includes experienced school data and IT consultants, as well as legal consultants.
We undertake school visits to assess the status of compliance and advise on priorities and implementation. We also conduct remote sessions on the phone and online with all our DPO customers.
Part of our service includes access to the Data Protection Education Knowledge Bank, an online portal with various features:
- Best Practice Library (policies, procedures, guidance and templates)
- Best Practice checklists
- E-learning library (plus manager reports)
- Events listings (workshops for our clients)
- Document Compliance Manager (plus manager reports)
- Data logs - subject access requests, freedom of information, data breaches
- Record of processing tool (lists school processes, assesses risks etc)
- User management tools
- News/blog etc
We also support schools using other GDPR compliance platforms and you may be expected to support schools on the platform of their choice. You will always be supported by the rest of the team
We need some additional help supporting schools in remote consultations and also, depending on skills and experience, developing content and if you have legal qualifications being part of our core-DPO team, responding to school incidents and issues.
Best practice content areas are mainly around school operations where data is handled. Whilst we are concerned with personal data, we also look at it within the context of overall information security, so all aspects of where data is used.
We are also expanding out into other areas where data management supports compliance programmes - such as finance and have a special interest in someone with a health and safety background.
As well as remote consultations you would be expected to undertake some of our school visits when safety permits. This would typically involve travel so car and driving licence is essential and sometimes overnights away (expenses paid).
What you’ll be doing
This role, therefore, has three potential elements:
1) Visiting schools to undertake data protection audits and assist with implementing our processes, systems and training (when safety allows)
2) Client liaison across the business with colleagues nationally at all levels and will be delivering policy and best practice guidance in remote consultations (online and on the phone) with our school customers.
3) Contribution to content in our Knowledge Bank - assisting with the writing and development of best practice guidelines, policies and school process definitions.
4) ...and if qualified - assisting with questions, queries and inbound support requests.
A little bit about you
This is a rapidly developing area and it will be important to help establish new ways of working. Strong IT skills and familiarity with standard business tools will be important.
Experience in working with schools/public sector is very desirable to understand the culture, so those with an administrative background, safeguarding, leadership/management, or teaching experience welcome. But also strong personalities required who aren't afraid to challenge the status quo and speak directly to and occasionally challenge and persuade leadership figures.
You will need to be able to work on your own, directly with your allocated schools if that part of the role is suitable. We need someone to cover schools in the East of England, predominantly in west Norfolk, so please bear that in mind again if that part of the role interests you.
We would really like to hear from experienced school administrators - school business managers, hands-on governors, compliance or school business management consultants who understand the administrative working of schools - both primary and secondary. Also anyone with a legal qualification of data protection certifications.
As an independent consultant, you will be paid a daily rate + expenses. You will be expected to have your own laptop, phone and transportation.
If you are the right person for the job and willing to develop schools capabilities in an issue that not only ensures compliance but also improves the school working procedures, then we can be flexible and supportive of your needs.
To apply, tell us about your experience working with schools and why you'd like to work in compliance and data security along with a CV. Once we’ve reviewed we’ll arrange a short chat on the phone for us to get to know each other a little better.
Also, tell us how many days you are available.
A start is possible as soon as you are ready.
