The internal audit office, independent of management and objective in its focus, is responsible for producing a risk-based audit plan which covers the whole University and its subsidiary companies.

The Head of Internal Audit is responsible for maintaining the Internal Audit Strategy and planning and delivering a risk-based audit plan across all of the University’s activities and subsidiary companies. The Head of Internal Audit needs to have a broad understanding of the strategic objectives, operational processes and risks of the University in order to persuade, influence and negotiate with many different stakeholders i.e. members of the University’s Executive, Professional Service Unit Directors and senior employees, in particular the Chief Operating Officer, and thus help bring about improvements in the University’s arrangements for control, governance, risk management and promoting value for money.

Building on the department’s historic emphasis of careful planning, execution and follow up of compliance risks as part of an agreed cycle, you will support the governing body’s increasing focus on major strategic risks and operational risks.

Managing the small team and conducting audits yourself, you will advise the University on the commissioning and oversight of external audits where specialist expertise is not available in house.

The successful applicant will be IIA accredited or have equivalent accountancy qualifications along with a comprehensive understanding of internal audit either in a higher education institution or equivalent context and will be able to balance commerciality, public benefit, and not-for-profit considerations. A working knowledge of project assurance and risk management as well as the highest standards of discretion, confidentiality and sound independent judgement are essential.

In return, the successful applicant will have exciting opportunities to support world leading research and education, joining a supportive team and environment.

At Cranfield we value Diversity and Inclusion, and aim to create and maintain a culture in which everyone can work and study together harmoniously with dignity and respect and realise their full potential.

Our equal opportunities and diversity monitoring has shown that women and minority ethnic groups are currently underrepresented within the university and so we actively encourage applications from eligible candidates from these groups.

We actively consider flexible working options such as part-time, compressed or flexible hours and/or an element of homeworking, and whether a position can be carried out at any of our locations. We commit to exploring the possibilities for each role. Find out more here.
