Learning Officer - Mission: Invertebrate
The LookOut, Hyde Park (with travel to parks and schools across London)

About Us

Created in March 2017, The Royal Parks is a charity that supports and manages 5,000 acres of historic parkland across London. Millions of Londoners and tourists visit our beautiful sites, which offer unparalleled opportunities for enjoyment, exploration and healthy living in the heart of the capital.

We look after eight of London’s largest open spaces; Hyde Park, The Green, Richmond, Greenwich, St James’s, Bushy and The Regent’s Parks, and Kensington Gardens. We also manage other important open spaces in the capital including Brompton Cemetery, Victoria Tower Gardens, Canning Green and Poet’s Corner.

Established in 2017, Mission: Invertebrate (MI) aims to enrich wildlife across London’s Royal Parks by supporting invertebrates, the parks’ most important inhabitants. Funded by players of People’s Postcode Lottery, the project aims to get people of all ages involved to ensure MI’s impact lasts long into the future. Our schools and family learning programmes are integral to achieving this goal.

We’re looking for a Learning Officer to join us on a maternity cover contract until December 2021, working 36 hours per week, and support the success of Mission: Invertebrate.

The Benefits

- Salary of £27,801 - £31,000 pro rata
- Pension scheme
- 26 days’ holiday pro rata plus public holidays

Invertebrates are a cornerstone of biodiversity and underpin our populations of birds, small mammals and their predators, the quality of our soils and waterbodies, the abundance and variety of plant species and the health of our trees. Investment in their conservation is vital.

This is an amazing opportunity to share your passion for nature and inspire people of all ages to ensure that our parks are a place where invertebrates thrive

What’s more, you’ll benefit from an inspiring work environment at the LookOut, a unique, eco-friendly building nestled in an acre of enclosed grounds in the heart of Hyde Park.

The Role

As the Learning Officer, you’ll co-ordinate and deliver an exciting and ambitious learning programme to inspire and educate audiences about the wonders of the invertebrate world and their habitats.

A key aspect of your role will involve creating online learning resources so we can continue to educate schools and families while COVID-19 restrictions are in place.

Working with the Mission: Invertebrate Project Manager and Learning Team, you will:

- Deliver an inspiring and hands-on programme of online and physical events and activities across the Royal Parks
- Research, develop and prepare creative online learning and engagement materials, including session plans, for a variety of audiences
- Create school materials, storytelling sessions, craft resources and outdoor activities
- Oversee the implementation of a brand-new virtual learning environment for our online learning resources
- Promote the learning programme to local primary schools and engage with them online, within their schools and in the parks

About You

To join us as a Learning Officer, you will need:

- Experience of delivering outdoor environmental education to EYFS, primary and secondary students
- The ability to adapt sessions according to weather conditions, the needs of each group and other unforeseen circumstances that may arise
- Experience of using innovative teaching aids and scientific equipment to bring learning to life
- An awareness of safeguarding children, young people and adults at risk
- Strong IT skills, including proficiency in MS Office and Adobe software to produce educational resources
- A full driving licence to drive our class 1 'bugmobile’ vehicle
- A degree (or equivalent) in Ecology, Natural Sciences, Biology or a similar subject

Other organisations may call this role Outdoor Learning Officer, Learning Programme Co-ordinator, Learning Programme Officer, Education Programme Officer, Teacher, Forest School Leader, or Outdoor Learning Programme Officer.
