We are a digital bank, which presents heightened risks from an underwriting perspective.

As an underwriter, you will work as part of the underwriting team and will be expected to support all forms of underwriting across retail banking products, with a focus on residential mortgage underwriting.

You'll be responsible for reviewing and underwriting residential and buy to let mortgage applications, further advances and loan modifications in line with lending criteria, procedures and controls. The role holder will also deal with underwriting queries from selected introducers, efficiently and effectively. The role holder will also be expected to recommend improvements to underwriting policies and processes.

Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities

•Underwrite residential and buy to let mortgage applications, further advances and loan modifications in line with lending policy, ensuring the principles of conduct risk, TCF and responsible lending are observed and detailed affordability assessments complete.
•Operate within own personal lending mandate, referring cases outside of that mandate to more senior colleagues or committees as per the Bank's policies
•Ensure that all correspondence, including identification, income documents, references and valuations, are in line with lending policy and provide sufficient evidence to satisfy KYC and AML requirements
•Ensure that all applications are complete and a robust rationale for the lending decision is documented on the lending system
•Manage own caseload, handle underwriting queries and resolve issues on individual cases
•Liaise with customers, intermediaries and related 3rd parties (including valuers and conveyancers) to gather information to make appropriate decisions and explain rationale behind lending decisions.
•Act fairly, reasonably and with integrity in all dealings with customers, intermediaries, valuers and solicitors, ensuring TCF and responsible lending principles are observed
•Remain up to date with knowledge by reading professional publications, participating in professional organisations and maintaining personal networks
•Work effectively with colleagues from within the underwriting, risk, mortgages and other associated teams
•Fully embrace the Bank's culture and values
•Identify potential improvements to underwriting systems, policies, criteria and processes
•Undertake ad hoc work as directed by line manager from time to time

Essential Capabilities/Experience

•Educated to at least GCSE level, including Maths and English (minimum Grade C)
•Considerable experience in prime residential mortgage lending (first and second charges and BTL) including holding a lending mandate of at least GBP250k.
•Has a full understanding of the principles of Responsible Lending, Conduct Risk, TCF and FCA thematic reviews
•Good understanding of the mortgage intermediary market and related FCA permissions, the principles of Responsible Lending, TCF and FCA thematic reviews
•Conversant with credit bureau data and its interpretation
•Conversant with residential lending law and practice.
•Good verbal and written communication skills
•Hardworking, flexible and able to work under own initiative
•Experience in a dynamic, fast paced and customer centric environment

Desirable Capabilities/Experience

•Higher education qualifications
•Appropriate professional qualifications
•Prior experience/knowledge of personal banking application u/w (e.g. credit cards, overdrafts, unsecured loans)
•Confident, assertive and pragmatic approach with ability to exercise judgement and discretion where appropriate
•Fully CeMAP qualified
