Department for Transport is a hugely interesting and varied Department. The Maritime Directorate sits within the International, Security and Environment Group in the department. The UK maritime sector is an important direct contributor to our economy generating at least £14bn GVA per annum for the economy, supporting over 140,000 jobs directly. The UK is dependent on maritime trade to move much of the food, energy, goods and commodities on which we depend, moving 95% of everything that enters or leaves the United Kingdom. UK ports are also the crucial link in our export chain.

We are looking for an exceptional individual to lead the UK government’s work for the maritime sector both domestically and internationally. This is a very interesting role. You will be expected to lead the government’s responsibilities for a private sector industry working in an international free market, whose effective functioning, resilience, environmental performance and safety record are of critical importance for this country. You will be working with both domestic and international partners, at European and global levels, covering a wide range of politically sensitive and high profile issues including: facilitating UK maritime trade, determining the international regulatory framework for shipping, pressing for international action on shipping emissions, ensuring the security of UK ships and ports, securing port investment and inland connectivity and driving forward the recommendations from the 2015 Maritime Growth Study to grow the maritime sector.

To be successful in this post you will have to demonstrate a strong track record of creating and implementing long term strategies that maximize opportunities to add value to the UK. You will be an effective and strong communicator and have the ability to translate strategic priorities into clear, outcome-focused objectives and policies for others. You will possess highly developed leadership skills, with the proven ability to inspire your teams, develop capability, and create an engaged and motivated workforce. You will also have the ability to work collaboratively and confidently with senior colleagues, and to command the confidence of industry partners and Ministers.
