Candidate The ideal candidate will have/be:- Worked in the finance team of a law firm or a similarly-run professional services firmFully qualified / almost qualified ACA/CIMA/ACCA accountantStrong technical accounting skillsExperience of Elite Enterprise (or a similar financial system) with demonstrable skills in understanding the system, its structure and capabilities including reporting Advanced Excel skillsExperience of management reporting and an interest in understanding business needs with a view to maximising effectiveness and efficiency in this area A thorough understanding of the full range of standard accounting practices within a progressive firm in the legal sector, to include knowledge of regulatory requirements in respect of VAT guidelines, Solicitors' Accounts Rules and Money Laundering RegulationsProfessional, personable and approachable but firm Job Description This is a critical role that will have a lot of responsibility in the function. The role offers great potential to a candidate wishing to have wider exposure to the broad range of areas in a finance function and to have experience in providing all aspects of financial support in a professional services organisation. The successful candidate will work closely with the Financial Controller to ensure the accuracy of our financial records and that reporting is timely, accurate and best suited to meet the needs of the business. The successful candidate will be encouraged and expected to deliver continuous improvement and to support other team members and the wider firm with their technical accounting and systems knowledge. Key areas of responsibility will be: Maintenance of the financial records of the firm (the role will have responsibility for the trial balance) and the production of management reportsManagement of month end and year end processes Lead the annual budgeting process, using Excel to model time, revenue and cost in each business unit Calculate and enter all accruals, prepayments, provisions, rent, depreciation, amortisation and other, similar journalsCalculate and invoice rent to sub-tenantsCheck payroll and make journal entryLiaise regularly with the budget holders to support their understanding of their budgets and track progressPreparation of trial balance for audit purposes and day to day liaison with the external auditorsMaintenance and preparation of regulatory returns including VAT, data for submission to industry surveys and National StatisticsManagement of financial controls within the department, including reviewing and testing of regular housekeeping activities, checks to ensure system balancing and reconciling key balancesProviding and explaining regular and ad hoc information across the firm for internal and external useSupport key business activities such as forecasting and the production of key performance statistics as well as supporting ad hoc projects and initiativesBeing alert to opportunities for improving financial controls and efficiency in processesEnsuring key processes and policies are documented in our Finance Manual.
