Costing Accountant - Reading - Temporary - GBP14 - GBP16 per hour

Wade Macdonald have an exciting opportunity for a Costing Accountant to work with a fantastic organisation based in Reading.

The purpose of this role is to be responsible for providing costing advice and support for research and externally funded grants and contracts delivered by the company.

The duties of the role:

- Provide cost information for all research and externally funded contracts and advice on pricing and presentation of price to sponsors

- Provide advice on costing and pricing to staff within the project department

- Provide specialising costing for non-standard grants and contracts, including for high value bids

- Ensure all applications for research funding are compiled using the company standard overhead rates, charges and similar costs and adhere to the company pricing policy

- Liaise with funding agencies, external bodies and research councils as appropriate on matters relating to costings

- Ensure all costing tools and models are developed in accordance with the company's costing tool and reflect the full economic cost of any activity

- Manage the RCP costing tool - ensuring the system is updated regularly and maintaining core data such as salary scale, staff details, exchange rates, inflation and facilities

- Ensure knowledge on funding policy, funders policies, accounting treatment and other related matters are comprehensive and up to date with the team

- Provide direction and guidance as necessary to colleagues across the company on costing

- Attend if required any relevant sector groups, networks or meetings as a representative of the company and to promote exchange of good practice

- Ensure appropriate training is given to the company staff on full economic costing where required. This will include the delivery of training courses

Reporting to the head of the department, the post holder will receive one on one support, advice and mentoring on an ad hoc basis. Additional regular supervision meetings will also be held to discuss portfolio of work, general issues arising in performance of duties and ongoing support and professional development requirements. The post holder will also be given a mentor within the finance team and the opportunity to attend regular finance team meetings.

You will work closely with colleagues within the department and also within the finance function. Among other external relations, the following will be contacts in performance of duties: Funders including research councils, EU, UK government and agencies, international government and agencies, charities and other HEIs.


- Good communication skills

- Proficient in Microsoft Office

- AAT or similar qualification OR Part Qualified ACCA or CIMA

- Studying towards a CCAB accounting qualification - would be a bonus

- Understanding of how research projects are costed and managed post award

- Good knowledge of funding body terms and conditions

- Excellent Excel skills

- Awareness of principles of FEC and TRAC

- Good knowledge of Agresso software - would be a bonus

- Experience in a research or finance administration role within higher education

- Experience of costing research proposals and financial management of projects post award - would be a bonus

- Good influencing and negotiation skills
