Our Local authority client in the West London area are currently looking for a Senior Fire Safety Officer to work on a contract basis.

MAIN PURPOSE

Provide a senior professional fire safety expertise including advice on fire
engineering proposals on building regulation applications submitted for the
Council's approval in respect of fire safety of buildings and Means of
Escape in case of fire, from all classes of buildings, as required under the
relevant legislation, to ensure public safety, and to give related professional
Advice to the Head of Service and the Environment Department on Safety
of Sports Grounds.

Description of Duties

To inspect buildings, installations and plans of proposed building work for compliance with relevant fire safety legislation.

To discuss and negotiate with the applicants, or their technical and professional advisers, to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and Council policy, safe, legal, and acceptable standards of fire safety of buildings and means of escape are achieved.

To recommend the approval or rejection of applications in respect of Fire Safety and Means of Escape from fire.

To inspect contraventions of Means of Escape legislation, recommend, and initiate the related enforcement Notices and/or proceedings.

To liaise and negotiate as required with staff (including at senior level) in other Departments where means of escape advice is requested in respect of planning applications, buildings applications, and safety of Sports Grounds and Entertainment Licensing.

To check plans for compliance with the legislation to interpret the legislation where necessary and determine acceptable technical standards.

To produce and issue statutory approvals, conditional consents, and schedules of requirements.

To prepare evidence for, and be a professional witness at, Public Enquiries and attend legal proceedings, as required.

To consult with the London Fire Brigade where required by legislation and where otherwise necessary.

To maintain full and up-to-date knowledge of new materials and methods of building and their suitability for fire protection and to ensure that all new relevant information is passed to the surveyor.

To maintain a full and up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation and Council's policy, to ensure that applications comply.

To provide advice to enquiries from the public, Developers and Builders, on legislation, technical standards, materials and methods of construction and enforcement.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Experienced fire safety officer, ideally in the public sector
Relevant qualification and ideally membership of a relevant professional body.
