Our client in Leicester is looking for a Division manager. He/she will be expected to make a major contribution to the technical excellence and successful performance of the facility and to perform his/her duties in a competent manner commensurate with his/her qualifications and experience.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Manage a team of staff:
Lead and manage the organisation and operation of the animal facility delivering the highest standards of animal care, study support and breeding colony management.
Ensure the organisational structure and staffing levels are appropriate to meet the needs of DBS and the research community.
Recruit, train, appraise and develop staff including full responsibilities for performance management
Liaise with Transgenic Manager and Researchers to organise and plan the breeding of conventional and transgenic/genetically altered animals.
Liaise with the Senior Veterinary Technician and Researchers to assist and arrange work schedules for surgical procedures
Determine priorities and allocate resources to meet planned objectives and requirements
Advise on scientific and technical procedures and compliance with relevant legislation:
Keeps up to date with new legislation and ensures processes and practices are updated in line with new legislation
Develops internal and external networks to ensure best practice and enhancements in procedures and animal welfare are implemented as appropriate
Maintains accurate records pertaining to the use of animals in research and ensures robust processes are in place to ensure compliance with legislation
Contributes to the development of DBS and University policies and procedures relating to the use of animals in research and compliance with all legislative requirements.
Develops policies and procedures for scientific and technical support activities in order to ensure customer needs (internal and external) are met now and in the future
Facility management and Health and Safety
Deputise for the Director of DBS as required at internal and external meetings and committees and during absence. Assist with the operation of events where required.
Contribute pro-actively, as a management team member, to the development of the overall DBS strategy and policy.
Ensures that a high standard of hygiene control is in place within the DBS animal facilities by training and implementing Standard Operating Procedures.
Liaison with the Building Services and Safety Technician to ensure all equipment and facility maintenance is performed in order to keep the fabric and equipment in good order.
Ensure that all the Division's safety policies (under the direct supervision of the Biological and Chemical Safety Officer) are implemented and followed.
Reviews systems and processes own work area analysing areas for improvement and recommend/implement revised working practices, systems, equipment or processes.
Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience:
Educated to degree level, or equivalent, in a relevant subject and several years' experience working in an animal research environment
Proven substantial experience of managing a team
To have a comprehensive knowledge of The Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 and accompanying guidance notes, recommendations and codes of practice. Have a general knowledge of any other legislation relating the Division and animals
Well-developed knowledge of Health and Safety regulations and procedures
Substantial prior work experience relevant to the role
Considerable experience of managing an animal research facility
Experience in writing Risk Assessments and Standard Operating Procedures
Possess Fellowship/Membership of the Institute of Animal Technology
A Home Office personal licence modules 1 - 4
Experience of working with genetically altered animal models including colony management
Experience of working with surgical models
Experience of Project Management
Experience of budgetary control
