Starting salary is GBP32,843 for a 41-hour week (includes additional allowance) + civil service pension and excellent benefits

A career as a prison officer is no ordinary job. It's an opportunity to make a real difference, in a role that protects the public and inspires offenders to change. The part that Prison Officers play here at HMP High Down in the rehabilitation process is not without its challenges. But with your special blend of skills and our comprehensive training behind you, it's a role in which you can transform lives ??? including your own.

Joining our team at HMP High Down, you'll begin with our 12-week Prison Officer Entry Level Training (POELT), which starts with a week-long induction, where you'll meet your new colleagues and learn the routine. After that, residential training will help you to develop the interpersonal skills and practical techniques that will prepare you for any situation your new role might present.

What you can expect from us

Being a prison officer is a big responsibility. So, it's only right that we show recognition for what you do.

That's why, alongside the attractive starting salary, pension and 25 days' annual holiday (pro rata), there are so many other options and benefits on offer at HMP High Down. We want to make sure you receive the rewards you deserve ??? and the ones that suit you best too.

So, as well as being able to choose between a 39 or 41-hour shift week, you'll have access to childcare vouchers, annual season ticket loans, a free gym, a variety of exclusive discounts, free parking, access to a scheme to help with housing costs and our Give As You Earn scheme.

That's not all. When it comes to your career, this could be the beginning of something unique. The opportunities for personal growth and promotion here really do ensure something for everyone.

You could, for example, train to work in one of our healthcare units or with vulnerable prisoners, become a physical education officer, dog handler, or maybe even a trainer yourself.

Perhaps the most compelling reason to become a prison officer, however, is the sense of achievement you feel when you've helped get an offender's life back on track. It's the kind of experience you simply won't find anywhere else.

What we expect from our prison officers

There's no such thing as a typical prison officer: our people come from many different walks of life, just like the prisoners they work with. What you will need though is empathy, self-confidence and great communication skills. That's because building constructive, positive and professional relationships will be one of the most important and effective parts of your role.

Here at HMP High Down, our teams work in a modern and forward-thinking environment under experienced leadership. Teamwork plays a vital role in maintaining this, so you can expect to be fully supported by your colleagues from the very start. It's by working together that we can make the most difference.
