Regional Secretaries represent both the Union and its members in all aspects of the Union's role within their regional area and are central in developing and implementing the Union's strategic aims. We are inviting applications for a vacancy in this key senior role which has arisen in our South East Region. Due to the formation of the National Education Union the appointment will initially be on a fixed term contract until 31 December 2018.

The Regional Secretary is responsible locally for working with both staff and lay officers in building the organisation/capacity of the Union to ensure our continued effectiveness in delivery for members. The Regional Secretary is also responsible for the provision of services to members and for the presentation and promotion of the policies of the Union. We are seeking a candidate who can:

  • Implement an organising strategy that builds the capacity of the Union's lay structures
  • lead and manage a team of professional and support staff
  • develop and manage strategies and activities related to the recruitment and retention of members, of the largest teachers' organisation
  • serve the changing needs of an increasing membership
  • lead and co-ordinate casework
  • assist and advise in negotiations with local employers
  • organise Union training within the regional area.

To apply for this position you will need to have proven experience in developing and implementing effective organising strategy, in conducting local negotiations and complex casework and have the ability to manage the regional team. Ideally applicants will have knowledge of the education system in England. We offer a good conditions of service package including commencing salary of GBP60,966 per annum (which includes a non-superannuable luncheon allowance of GBP948), an annual leave allowance of 31 ?? days increasing to 36 ?? days with long service, plus additional days after some bank/public holidays and at Christmas/New Year and a contributory final salary pension scheme. A car will also be provided to the successful applicant to enable them to fulfil the requirements of the role.
