The role could be suitable for a part or newly qualified individual who is looking to enhance and develop a generalist financial management skill-set; full support and, potentially, further training opportunities would be offered.


  • To manage the day to day operations of the Finance department and associated admin functions
  • Act as Deputy on finance matters in the absence of the Business Director when requested
  • Produce relevant and appropriate processes and procedures for Finance, including the production of a Finance Manual
  • Maintain accurate financial records and documentation to ensure consistent audit trails and a sound basis for financial analysis and decision-making
  • Ensure the adherence by staff to all policies and procedures, reporting where necessary non-compliance to the Business Director or Headteacher
  • Assist the Business Director to maximise income through lettings and extended services provision
  • Remain up to date with changes to financial regulations and undertake training to ensure that LAET follows best practice in this area

Financial accounting

  • To plan and prepare year end statutory accounts and audits
  • To produce monthly management accounts, cost centre reports and variance analysis
  • Ensure the integrity of the nominal ledger and provide monthly reconciliations of the bank and other key control accounts
  • To manage the purchase order process and purchase ledger ensuring that all payments to suppliers are made in a timely manner and are accurately recorded
  • To supervise the school's sales ledger ensuring that all income is promptly and accurately invoiced and robust credit control procedures are developed and adhered to
  • Manage the charging and reclaim of VAT in an efficient manner and complete all relevant HMRC returns
  • To organise and respond to reports from the responsible officer and auditors
  • Manage and maintain an effective asset register for LAE Tottenham ensuring it is regularly updated
  • Manage and improve the financial software used ensuring that the data entered is accurate and entered in a timely way
  • Prepare all relevant and appropriate journals for approval by the Business Director before posting to the finance software
  • Manage and annually assess the effectiveness of central resource purchasing for LAE Tottenham, establishing and implementing robust, accountable ordering processes to ensure LAE Tottenham achieves best value

Budgets and reporting

  • To assist the Business Director with producing budgets, forecasts and variance analysis
  • To manage the central admin budget
  • Provide timely and accurate reporting to budget holders
  • To provide financial support and training to budget holders as required
  • Ensure the effective, accurate and timely delivery of financial reports and information to the Business Director
  • To assist with preparation of the annual financial statements and returns to the DfE, EFA, NAO, ONS etc
  • To prepare and submit HMRC Returns e.g. payroll, Gift Aid and VAT as necessary


  • Prepare monthly payroll information for submission to outsourced payroll provider
  • To manage all payroll and pensions administration processes and statutory returns
  • To review payroll on a monthly basis for accuracy and ensure all HMRC and pensions returns are sent according to timescales
  • Ensure all payroll, PAYE and pensions data is posted to the chosen finance software in a timely and accurate way

HR and line management

  • To assist with the recruitment of Business, Administrative and Technical staff
  • Be responsible for the planning, development, design, organisation and monitoring of support service and LAE Tottenham systems/ procedures/policies
  • Line management of the Finance Assistant (once in post)
