We're looking for an exceptional candidate to take on the brand new role of Countryside Manager at the Ashridge Estate, on the Hertfordshire/Buckinghamshire border.

One of the most important National Trust properties in the Chilterns, Ashridge is a thriving countryside estate and visitor attraction. It includes working farms, a strong residential let estate, SSSI's, an SAC and Grade II* listed parkland as well as the largest area of woodland anywhere in the Trust. It is noted for its calcareous chalk downland and the rich diversity of species this habitat supports. We need an experienced countryside manager who can take on this new role and make it their own. There are huge opportunities here and juggling conservation, estate maintenance and visitor engagement is both challenging and rewarding.

What it's like to work here

Visitor numbers have increased rapidly in recent years and balancing the pressures this puts on our teams and our conservation work is a key part of this role. Public expectation is high and few days pan out quite how you'd planned them. You'll be required to work flexibly to provide regular cover at weekends and to work some evenings.

What you'll be doing

You'll work alongside a small team of rangers and volunteers to bring projects and plans for the outdoors to life. Some of the exciting plans for the estate this year include the provision of surfaced pay and display car parking and the development of a seasonal camping offer.

You'll be involved in these projects, and will be leading your team with the day to day countryside management, but we'll also need you to be strategic and develop your own plans for the outdoors. This will be a role that blends hands on countryside management, with leadership and project involvement, from design to delivery. It's a great chance to make sure that all our work is underpinned by sound conservation practice and that our visitor engagement and commercial developments are completely in tune with this.

Who we're looking for

  • We're looking for someone with significant, demonstrable experience in:
  • Countryside Management
  • Managing farming and forestry grant funding schemes
  • Dealing with difficult situations with confidence
  • Management of contractors
  • Project delivery to a value of GBP150K
  • Operational budgetary management to a value of GBP50K (excluding wage costs)
  • Identifying and delivering new commercial income streams
  • Motivating and inspiring a staff team and a volunteering community
  • Balancing conservation, access, presentation and engagement
  • Creating and delivering visitor engagement programmes in the outdoors
  • Producing brilliant written work and presentations

The assessment day for this role is Tuesday 8 August. However, we can be flexible if booked holidays make this date difficult.

The assessment includes giving a PowerPoint presentation to our countryside and visitor experience team, a written assessment to test your literacy, comprehension and numeracy skills, a habitat assessment to test your nature conservation knowledge and a formal interview.
